“ | Oogway: Grown up as I hoped you would when I sent the message to your father. Po: You sent the universe mail. Woah. Oogway: Yes, because the universe needed you. You finally became the panda you always meant to be. Po: How did you know I could? Oogway: On the first day we met, I saw the future of Kung-Fu, and the past. I saw the panda who could unite them both. That is why I chose you, Po. Both sides of a Yin and Yang, and my true successor. |

~ Oogway revealing why he chose Po as the Dragon Warrior. |
Master Oogway is the overarching protagonist of the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
He is a wise turtle who after ending the reign of terror of the demon Ke-Pa, has become a nationwide peacemaker for China, being the creator of Kung Fu and one of its greatest saviours, as well as the previous senior master of the Jade Palace and Po's predecessor as the Dragon Master.
He was voiced by Randall Duk Kim in most of his appearances and by Piotr Michael in Paws of Destiny.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He is a protector of China, even after his death.
- He saved countless people from dangerous threats, or helped in stopping them, such as Ke-Pa, Kai, Tai Lung, Jindiao, etc.
- He is the most successful schemer in the franchise, even purposefully getting defeated by Kai so Po can learn to master chi and stop him himself, and it worked wonders as every one of the threats that Oogway has foreseen have been eventually defeated by Po, directly or indirectly. He also had a scheme to make Tigress form the Furious Five to defeat the dangerous villain Boar, and his scheme of making Master Rhino, Ox and Croc into learning teamwork and stop the Wu Sisters.
- Even when he was implied to be a conqueror, it would've been for genuinely good and anti-villainous motives of bringing an age of peace, and redeemed himself after the pandas showed compassion towards him and healed him of his grave injuries.
- He took in a young Shifu when he was abandoned by his father in a young age and trained him with other students.
- He always gives wise advice to everyone for them to improve, successfully making Po, Shifu, Tigress, Monkey, Rhino, Ox and Croc into becoming better people.
- As the creator of kung fu, he is one of the best fighters in the franchise. The only reasons he could be defeated, or nearly defeated, is due to something he didn't expect (such as Ke-Pa still being in the Valley of Peace, or being ambushed by another army), or wanted to be defeated for his plan to work (such as with his battle with Kai).
- After declaring Po as his successor, Oogway managed to convince Po to find a way to return to the Mortal Realm.
- Oogway warned Po about all the future threats he and his new students, the 4 constellations, will face and must defeat, giving visions of Jindiao and the White Bone Demon to organize their defeats.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- The third film implies that in his quest for peace following the defeats of Ke-Pa and Jindiao, he became a conqueror with him having a powerful army with Kai as his general.
- Furthermore, Kai mentioning his titles "The Beast of Vengeance" and "Maker of Widows" imply that it was Oogway that changed rather than Kai and that a lot of blood was shed at that time by his hands.
- He directly endangers the lives of his students, as he threw Rhino, Ox, and Croc down a cliff so they could learn teamwork and form a bridge to save themselves so Oogway could cross and pick them up (which had high potential to kill them had they not learned) and indirectly got Shifu receiving food poisoning so Tigress could recruit some people with barely any experience to fight a dangerous villain like Boar (nearly getting them all killed) in order to form the Furious Five.
Trivia[]
