Your angel of death awaits.
~ The Phantasm to her victims.
Batman: Your father's dead, isn't he? You came into town early to get Chuckie Sol, so you could shift the blame to your father if you had to.
Andrea: They took everything, Bruce; my dad, my life, you. I'm not saying it's right or... or even sane, but it's all I've got left. So either help me or get out of the way.
Batman: You know I can't do that.
Andrea: Look what they did to us, what we could've had! They had to pay!
Batman: But Andi, what will vengeance solve?
Andrea: If anyone knows the answer to that, Bruce, it's you.
~ Andrea Beaumont explaining her motives to Batman.

Andrea Beaumont, also known as the Phantasm, is the titular secondary antagonist of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, the first animated film based on Batman: The Animated Series.

She is a former lover of Bruce Wayne turned deadly vigilante, who targets Salvatore Valestra and his mob crew, including the Joker, for the death of her father, Carl Beaumont. She also fights Batman for getting in the way.

The Phantasm was voiced by Stacy Keach, while Andrea was voiced by Dana Delany.

What Makes Her Magnificent?[]

  • She has a tragic backstory of being forced to leave behind her engagement to Bruce Wayne due to her father Carl getting caught up in the mob, followed by Carl getting murdered in his own home by the Joker even after he paid his debt to said mob.
  • She's highly skilled at using smoke pellets to disappear and reappear almost at will, which (combined with dressing up like the grim reaper) gives her a "creepy awesome" demeanor and makes her appear borderline supernatural.
  • She deduces Batman's true identity through sheer analysis, catching him spying on her next to Thomas and Martha Wayne's grave; the exact same location where Bruce and Andrea first met several years ago.
  • She ultimately succeeds 60% of her goal to avenge her father's death, killing Chuckie Sol, Buzz Bronski and Arthur Reeves.
    • In the process of it all, she also manages to send Batman on a wild goose chase by framing him for the former two's deaths in the eyes of both the mob and the police, scheduling an "official" return to Gotham by plane while also keeping her father's death secret so she could shift the blame over to him if necessary.
    • The only ones involved in her father's death that she couldn't kill were Salvatore Valestra and the Joker, the former of whom is killed by the latter, who she then spares at Batman's request. This shows that, despite Bruce and Andrea's enmity with one another, she still respects him to a degree, making her all the more endearing as an antagonist.
  • Despite their mutual enmity with one another, she saves Batman's life twice. First near the construction site when he's cornered by the police, and second in the tie-in comics when Arthur Reeves tries to assassinate him.
  • In The Batman Adventures, she infiltrates the False Face Society and usurps Black Mask as the Red Hood's lieutenant.
  • In the Justice League Unlimited episode "Epilogue", it's shown in a flashback that she had enough human decency to not actually go through with killing an 8-year-old Terry McGinnis' parents in front of him under orders from Amanda Waller to complete "Project Batman Beyond", telling the latter where to shove it afterwards. As a result, Waller was convinced to become a better person, never resorting to murder in honor of Bruce Wayne's legacy.
  • In the end, she's still on the run and has yet to be defeated by Batman or any kind of law enforcement.

What Makes Her a Baddie?[]

  • Overall, despite having understandable motives in the film (not to mention the mobsters she kills had it coming for a long time), her vigilantism isn't really portrayed in a positive light at all because "vengeance blackens the soul" as Alfred puts it, as she is killing the mobsters while they are defenseless. She even admits it herself that she's not proud of what she's become, but it's all she has left.
  • Her framing Batman for her own murders nearly gets him killed by the police when he tries to clear his name.
  • She became a full-blown mercenary after avenging her father's death, selling her services as a spy, thief and enforcer who's still murdering people, proving Alfred's assessments of how vengeance blackened Andrea's soul.
  • In The Batman Adventures, she tries to drown Batgirl in an attempt to draw out Batman.
