Piccolo is one of the main characters in the Dragon Ball franchise. He is a Namekian who is the reincarnation/son of the Demon King Piccolo. He originally starts out as a villain who attempts to kill Goku and conquer the world like his father did, but then becomes a member of the Z-Fighters after the Saiyan Saga. He is also Gohan's best friend and mentor.
He is voiced by Toshio Furukawa in the Japanese dub, Scott McNeil in the Ocean dub and Christopher R. Sabat in the Funimation dub.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He has a very impressive, cool and iconic appearance.
- His voice actors Toshio Furuwaka, Scott McNeil and Chris Sabat do an outstanding job performing him.
- Even before redeeming himself, he saved a boy from some falling rubble on his way to the World Martial Arts Tournament, proving he already had good in him.
- He isn't cocky or arrogant and is quite intelligent and strategic, always thinking first before charging in to fight someone by sensing their energy and training to make sure he's a match for his opponents. Notable examples of his strategic intelligence include:
- Swallowing Kami during the World Martial Arts Tournament, knowing that as both Kami and Piccolo's lives are linked due to him being the reincarnation of Demon King Piccolo, any attempts from Goku to kill him will kill Kami as well and disable the Dragon Balls forever.
- Clearly learning from his father / past life King Piccolo's death, Piccolo disabled all of Goku's limbs to prevent him from killing him with a single punch again. He was only defeated by Goku using Flight which he could not predict.
- Having Goku distract Raditz while he charges his Special Beam Cannon.
- Fusing with Nail and Kami to gain an advantage against Frieza and Cell.
- Distracting Frieza and Cell Max while Goku and Gohan use the Spirit Bomb and the Special Beam Cannon.
- Using the Hellzone Grenade against opponents like Android 17 and Rubalt by blasting numerous amounts of energy around them and then hitting them with it, severely injuring them.
- Creating clones of himself to distract Frost while he charges his energy for his attack.
- Creating dust to use for cover and heating the arena to confuse Prum and Harmira.
- Firing a Special Beam Cannon through Saonel and Pilina, which weakens them enough for Gohan to finish them off with a Kamehameha.
- Easily seeing through Xiangca's illusions and eliminating him.
- Lending his energy to help Goku defeat villains like Kid Buu and Moro.
- He is genuinely honorable. He lets Krillin walk away without killing him after he forfeits during their match and after his first defeat, he chooses to leave Goku and his friends alone peacefully for the time being, but still promises to come back.
- He avoids becoming a mind slave twice, as he was completely immune to the Black Water Mist that Garlic Jr. infected everyone on Earth with and feigned succumbing to it to gain an advantage against Garlic Jr. and his men, and in the non-canon sequel series Dragon Ball GT, he was one of the few characters that avoided being infected and brainwashed by Baby.
- While still wanting to continue his father's goals, he begrudgingly teams up with Goku and saves his son Gohan from his brother Raditz.
- While he was rough when training Gohan, he at least gave him an apple during his first few days and when he turned into a Great Ape, Piccolo ripped off his tail to keep him from causing anymore havoc. He eventually develops a strong bond with him and the two become like father and son.
- He redeems himself during his fight with Vegeta and Nappa by saving Gohan's life and sacrificing himself by jumping in front of Nappa's attack.
- He asks Gohan to revive him so that he can avenge the Namekians by defeating Frieza and bringing back the Dragon Balls and saving Nail's life by fusing his body into his.
- After the fight with Frieza, Piccolo becomes a permanent member of the Z-Fighters and helps in numerous fights with villains such as Cell, Majin Buu, Moro, the Red Ribbon Army, etc.
- He shows respect for Trunks and Goten's desire to be like their fathers, telling them they have greatness in them and having confidence that they will one day surpass them.
- Tried to trick Super Buu when Gotenks were training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber by making him go the long way and even suggested he kill all humans on Earth (while planning to immediately revive them using Dragon Balls). He was horrified when Buu took his advice and launched the Human Extinction Attack to kill everyone.
- When Gotenks pretended to fall short of defeating Buu, Piccolo, while misunderstanding him, destroyed the door of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to seal themselves and Buu for eternity.
- While it sounds impulsive, it was justified as Piccolo believed the last chance to save the universe was gone and Buu had to be stopped no matter what, and if anything, the one who's at fault is Gotenks.
- His strategic mind attracted Buu's attention as he specifically absorbed him to gain his intelligence, using smarts inherited from the absorbed Piccolo to lure Gohan into a trap to absorb him.
- When Gohan and Videl are not around, Piccolo acts as a father figure to their daughter Pan and plays with her, even telling Goku, Chi-Chi, and Goten about all the things she likes, showing how close he is to her.
- Reprimanded Gohan about his arrogance being a major flaw in fights, and trained him to overcome it.
- Eventually, he and Gohan manage to become as strong as Goku's Ultra Instinct form and presumably even manage to surpass him after the fight with Cell Max.
What Makes Him A Baddie?[]
- Following his father's death, he attempts to take over the world and kill Goku.
- He launches an Explosive Wave during his fight with Goku at the World Martial Arts Tournaments, which could've killed everyone there and possibly even more.
- He brutally beats Goku to the brink of death in front of all his friends, with this beatdown implying it has given Chi-Chi PTSD and would explain her overprotective and hot-headed personality since Dragon Ball Z.
- After his fight with Raditz, he abducts Gohan (who was four years old at the time) and leaves him in the wild to fend for himself for 6 months, not caring if he gets killed by any wild animals.
