~ Killmonger's deal to the Guardians of the Multiverse, after defeating Infinity Ultron. |
First Lieutenant Erik Stevens (born N'Jadaka), also known as Erik Killmonger, is a major antagonist in animated anthology series What If...?, serving as the secondary antagonist of Season 1 and a minor antagonist in Season 2.
He is a Wakandan-American assassin and mercenary whose father was killed by T'Chaka for betraying Wakanda and helping Klaue steal Vibranium from Wakanda. Unlike his main timeline counterpart, this version of Killmonger saved Tony in Afghanistan and made a friendship with him, using Tony's knowledge and resources to build his own army of drones to promote his own agenda.
Like his main timeline iteration, he was voiced by Michael B. Jordan.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- For starters, he's way more pragmatic and subtle than his Sacred Timeline counterpart, preferring a false flag operation rather than a naked revenge-induced coup. The result is a very successful villain.
- He also likes anime, which at least implies that he's not a bigot. This is a sharp contrast to his portrayal in the movies where he plans to forcefully subjugate all countries outside of Wakanda, blames random white people for their ancestors' crimes, and is shown to be sadistically violent towards numerous women.
- He saves Tony Stark from the Ten Rings in Afghanistan right before a bomb puts shrapnel in his chest, after which he exposes Obadiah Stane's criminal activities before becoming the former's new COO.
- While working at Stark Industries, he convinces Tony to buy stolen Vibranium from Ulysses Klaue, who leaks word of the sale to the Wakandan War Dogs to lure Black Panther into a trap.
- He also uses T'Challa, Rhodey, and Tony's subsequent deaths to start an all-out war between America and Wakanda, framing the former two as a mutual kill and the latter one (which wasn't even part of his initial plan but worked out in his favor anyway) as an assassination from the Dora Milaje. If only Shuri didn't have her mysterious evidence to take to Pepper Potts, nobody would have any confirmation of his involvement at all.
- He lures the Stark Liberator Drones to Wakanda, coming out a hero and thus becoming the next Black Panther.
- After taking the Infinity Stones from Ultron's dead body, rather than simply killing them all right away, he initially offers to share his power with the Guardians of the Multiverse so they can remake their respective universes in their images.
- After breaking out of his imprisonment, he didn’t die immediately unlike some of the other prisoners and will most likely find a way to survive in a new universe.
- Eventually gets away with all his crimes in the ensuing chaos.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He kills T'Challa (his cousin), James Rhodes, Tony Stark, and Ulysses Klaue, although he does at least show a modicum of remorse with the first and third ones.
Trivia[]
- Both he and King Loki are the only 2 villains from What If...? to be Magnificent Baddies.
