Reginald is the overarching supporting character of the 2018 multi-genre point-and-click game The Hex.
Formerly known as Rootbeer Reggie, he was the star of Rootbeer Tender, Lionel Snill's true first game (as opposed to Super Weasel Kid). To pass himself off as child prodigy whose first game he developed was a massive hit, Lionel had his AI assistant Irving delete Rootbeer Tender and hide all information about it from everyone. But when Reginald refused to leave, Irving forcibly deleted his game and broke his legs, leaving him disabled for life and craving revenge. Becoming a barkeeper of Six Pint Inn, he brought along all six protagonists of Lionel's other games to get them to assist him in his plan to claim revenge against their creator.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He's a clever mastermind who successfully managed to get many people to cooperate with him in his plans for revenge against his creator, Lionel Snill.
- His personality and demeanor are that of a friendly elderly bartender who wants to give his patrons a good experience in his inn. He's also respectful to his patrons and even to the Player, thanking them for their cooperation and expressing hope that they enjoyed their time in Six Pint Inn as he was about to enact his revenge.
- He has a tragic backstory: he was a star of Lionel Snill's first game, Rootbeer Tender, which, in spite of being a relatively poorly-made Tapper knock-off, was still made with passion, with him (known as Rootbeer Reggie) being modelled after the younger version of Lionel's own grandfather. However, Lionel was ashamed of this game and wanted to bury it in history to come off as prodigy by passing off his more successful game, Super Weasel Kid, as his first game that he made in the young age of 12. As such, his AI assistant Irving came into Rootbeer Reggie's game, demanded it to be shut down, and when Reggie refused, Irving forcibly deleted his game, broke his legs and left him disabled for life, and hid all traces of his and his game's existence, all while stating that Lionel wanted all of this, a statement that made him swear revenge against Lionel.
- He has a sympathetic and understandable motive for wishing revenge on Lionel, as Lionel had his game deleted and was, by proxy, responsible for disabling him. Besides, he wasn't the only victim of Lionel, as the other protagonists also suffered greatly because of his actions. Also, Lionel was a massive egotistic jerk who mistreated his employees and stole money from their severance packages before fleeing, abandoning them without paying, blamed everything regarding his poor reputation on others, insulted and mistreated his own fanbase, all while flaunting himself in fame and denying that he did anything wrong. As such, Reggie comes off as more rootable in his vendetta.
- Through his right-hand man Jeremiah, Reginald brings all six protagonists of Lionel Snill's other games into his inn so that they may assist him in his revenge. He also assists them with their own problems in turn: he gives Chef Bryce a job and a place to stay in once the man permanently lost employment in video game franchises, and provides Chandrelle with the means to get rid of Vallamir inside her mind once Irving made him possess her as a punishment for making her game bomb.
- He coordinates a successful raid on the Gameworks Headquarters, retrieving the artifact required for a ritual needed for his revenge.
- Aware of his status as a video game character and knowing of the Player's presence, he gets them roped into his revenge plan by getting them invested into the game's plot by organizing the phone call that states that one of his inn's patrons is plotting to commit murder, announcing it to everyone and familiarizing the Player with his patrons and their backstories.
- Once Irving arrives into the Six Pint Inn to arrest Lazarus for his role in the aforementioned raid, he urges the spacemarine to hide in the kitchen and retrieve the gun. Afterwards, he subtly baits the man into coming out to murder Irving. And considering that Irving was directly responsible for the patrons' (and Reggie's) personal tragedies, outright harming almost all of them in the past, his murder was fully justified.
- After Lazarus murders Irving, Reginald pauses the game, turns to the Player, and, breaking the fourth wall, asks them if they enjoyed the reveal that the foreshadowed murder in question was Lazarus killing Irving. If the Player responds with yes, he'll take it in stride and roll the credits. But if the Player responds that they weren't satisfied, Reggie will be pleased, given that the Player being invested in the story is necessary for his goals, gives them control over ???, and urges them both to follow to his personal cabin to view ???'s backstory, along with his own.
- Once the player witnesses his backstory, Reggie finally reveals his end goal: to perform the ritual with the six protagonists of Lionel's games and the Player to open the Hex, a portal to the real world, and kill his creator, Lionel Snill, for all the suffering the man wrought upon them all. Afterwards, once the Player completes the ritual, he thanks them for their cooperation and states that he hopes that they enjoyed their stay in the Six Pint Inn, right before he goes to kill Lionel.
- Ultimately, he succeeds in securing his revenge that he planned for years, escaping to the real world and killing his creator Lionel Snill.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He orchestrated the raid on Gameworks Headquarters to retrieve the artifact, where his crew, led by his right-hand man Jeremiah, slaughtered many NPCs, who were simply people doing their job, and released Sado, a malevolent and destructive computer virus that destroys and kills everyone and everything on sight and toys with her prey.
- He murders Lionel Snill, who, while responsible for the great deal of suffering for the protagonists of his video games (himself included) and was a massive self-centered jerk who stole money from his workers and blamed everything on others, arguably did not deserve a fate as cruel as the murder and didn't even know that the video game characters that suffered because of him were sentient (in fact, when he found out by connecting the dots, he tried to apologize to Reggie for deleting his game and drowning it in obscurity, an apology that tragically never reached his eyes and ears).
