~ An anonymous Rick to Kara, his opening lines. |
Rick Malverne is a one-shot antagonist in the Arrowverse, serving as the main antagonist of Season 2, Ep. 19 of Supergirl called “Alex”. He is a former classmate of Alex and Kara Danvers who figured out the latter was Supergirl and kidnapped Alex to demand Supergirl release his criminal father from prison.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He has a tragic backstory of having a verbally and physically abusive mom for most of his life until he discovered who his dad was and how his mom hid him from him with his dad saving him and moving him away from his mom, motivating him to rescue his dad from prison as he once rescued him when he needed it most.
- He was the only person in Midvale who didn’t believe Kara and her family’s lie that she just happened to be able to save a family from a burning car via adrenaline and deduced that she was Supergirl shortly after she came to National City and Supergirl emerged there as well.
- He carefully planned for an entire year his operation to make the heroes free his dad, stalking Kara and all her allies to gather intel, discovering the existence of the top secret government agency, the DEO, that Supergirl worked with, and waiting until the time was right.
- He knocked out and kidnapped Alex, herself a highly trained secret agent and was able to deactivate her DEO embedded tracker to prevent the heroes from finding her.
- He sent an anonymous message to Kara revealing what had happened and used four different arrays to scramble the signal and prevent them from tracking him.
- When Supergirl confronts him in his house, he remains calm and gives her the chance to briefly speak with Alex to prove she was okay before having the computer remotely shut off and being completely unfazed and a little amused when Supergirl threatened to use her heat vision on him, remaining resolute in his demand that she free his father in exchange for Alex.
- He figured out a way to block the Martian Manhunter’s telepathy to prevent him from reading his mind and quickly deduced when the heroes gave him “his father” that it was really J’onn in disguise, revealing he had planned for this as well.
- When Alex is able to connect her subdermal tracker to one of the security cameras and send a signal, he remains collected and gives an earnest warning to the heroes not to pursue it and when Supergirl ignores him and goes after the signal, it is revealed he had remotely switched the signal and sent Supergirl to an abandoned warehouse to witness that the time to free Alex had now gone from 23 hours to 4 hours and Alex’s cell starting flooding with water, revealing he had planned for this as well and reminding Kara that he warned her not to follow the signal.
- He successfully manipulated Maggie into going to free his father.
- Ultimately, the heroes were unable to stop him on his own, Alex couldn’t free herself from her cell, and he came within seconds of victory, only losing because Kara made his dad have a sudden change of heart and give up the possible location Rick could be holding Alex which turned out to be correct and Kara narrowly being able to revive Alex just in time.
- He acknowledges his defeat and holds no ill feelings, remaining calm and indifferent as he is taken to prison.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He kidnapped Alex and nearly killed her.
- He attempted to free his dad who was a murderer by blackmailing the heroes and coldly dismissed the victims of his dad’s crimes.
