I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain. Time to die.
~ Roy Batty's last words, and one of the most iconic monologues in cinematic history.

Roy Batty is the main antagonist of the 1982 science fiction thriller film, Blade Runner. He is a rogue replicant who returned to earth with his allies in pursuit of a longer life, while being pursued by Rick Deckard. He was played by the late Rutger Hauer.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • He's often considered to be one of the most sympathetic anti-villains in film history, as all he wants is a longer life. Not just for him, but for his teammates too.
  • He always speaks in a philosophical manner.
  • He's genuinely affable most of the time, and this is rarely a facade.
  • He's competent enough to hijack a space shuttle with only 5 accomplices to return to earth. Something that likely required a lot of planning and skill.
  • Despite being a replicant, Roy is smart enough to bypass his own programming and gain free will of his own. Even his creator, Eldon Tyrell, admits that Roy is just as smart as he is.
  • Manipulated Hannibal Chew and J.F. Sebastian into bringing him to Tyrell with the hopes that he could be given the lifespan he desired.
  • Even before he kills J.F. Sebastian he genuinely apologizes to him.
  • He cares about his teammates as shown by how he comforts Pris as they mourn the loss of their teammates, and taking solace in that they still have each other.
  • His death is played for sympathy, as he saves Rick Deckard's life before waxing lyrical about the things he experienced over his life. Lamenting that his memories will die along with him.

What Makes Him A Baddie?[]

  • He's a terrorist who killed over 20 people when he hijacked the space shuttle before the story. While this happened offscreen it directly set off the plot.
  • He's willing to resort to torture in order to achieve his goals, leaving Hannibal Chew to freeze to death after he gets what he wanted.
  • Brutally murders Eldon Tyrell and J.F. Sebastian after learning that he can't be given a longer life.
