“ | Throughout Heaven and Earth, I alone am the honored one. | „ |
~ Gojo quoting Lord Buddha as he defeats Toji |
“ | I want to reset that garbage jujutsu world. Murdering everyone at the top would be an easy task. But they would just get replaced. It wouldn't bring a revolution. And if I did that, no one would follow me. That's why I chose education. To raise up strong, clever comrades. | „ |
~ Gojo's motivations for joining Jujutsu High's faculty |
Satoru Gojo is the overarching protagonist of the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise. He is the strongest and most legendary Jujutsu Sorcerer in the world, even rivaling and surpassing the King of Curses Ryomen Sukuna himself, and a teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High.
Priding himself as the strongest, in reality Gojo saw the value of the next generations and seeks to gift them the world to combat the Cursed Spirits that plague the world. This leads to frequently butting heads with the Jujutsu High Headquarters as he sees the flaws of their society and seeks to reform it, which is why he teaches at Jujutsu High. While dying to Ryomen Sukuna, he helped his students to finally defeat him and Kenjaku on their vile machinations for the world.
He was voiced by Yuichi Nakamura in Japanese, who also plays Bruno Bucciarati in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind and by Kaiji Tang in the English dub, who also voiced Guts in the 2016 Berserk series and Archer in the Ufotable Fate Stay Night animes.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Is, alongside Ryomen Sukuna, considered the strongest sorcerer in the world, manages to back up those claims multiple times (thus making him an one-man-army). Villains have to come up with plans to get around Gojo to take him down and even then he would almost always thwart it, and his power is such that Jujutsu Society lives in fear of him.
- Is one of the most charming characters in the series, being an easy going, jovial guy who is willing to join in on his students' antics and always enjoying himself, which makes it all the more chilling when he drops this and gets serious to face enemies and be unnerving in a mesmerizing way. This compelling screen presence is what lead to him becoming the most iconic character for the franchise and one of the most popular in 2010s and 2020s animanga culture.
- While beginning as an arrogant teen who looked down on the weaklings and is often a egotist, when growing attached to Riko Amanai, who he was sent to protect, and having his first and one of the very few failures he had when he faced and was bested by Toji Fushiguro, he dedicated himself to protecting the weak and innocent.
- When at the brink of death thanks to his confrontation with Toji, he taught himself the reversed cursed technique to heal himself and then unlock his new ability of Hollow Purple to finally beat him. He is then willing to support Toji's son and stepdaughter, Megumi and Tsumiki.
- For all of Gojo's ego, he looks forward to reforming Jujutsu Society and train students to even excel him at skills. It is why he would take in Yuta Okkotsu and Yuji Itadori and train them to be mighty sorcerers throughout the course of the series.
- Despite having been dismissive towards non-sorcerers due to knowing he is stronger than all of them, after failing to stop Geto from falling into darkness, Gojo changed his worldview and became a much more selfless sorcerer.
- Used Rika's sheer potential to convince the higher-ups to not execute Yuta, which impressed them so much the higher-ups freely assisted Yuta even after Gojo's own sealing.
- Due to understanding Rika's importance to Geto's plans to kill all non-sorcerers, Gojo accurately deduced that the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons is a distraction, and Geto is at Jujutsu High to kill Yuta. He then sent Toge Inumaki and Panda to Yuta, thus resulting in Yuta defeating Geto and putting a stop to his genocidal ambitions.
- Despite having to kill Geto, it was because he was fatally wounded and he will not have stopped in his goals to kill non-sorcerers no matter what. Despite everything, Gojo still humored him due to their friendship as Gojo mercy-killed him.
- Makes it repeatedly clear to the Jujutsu Headquarters that he can easily kill them all, keeping them on a leash to steer them away from some of their corrupt antics that it is no surprise their corruption is noticeably more blatant, such as ordering Masamichi Yaga and Yuji's executions for their own convenience and let Kenjaku's plotting roam free the moment Gojo was sealed.
- Steers Jujutsu HQ from executing Yuji by having him instead be used to devour all of Sukuna's fingers to end the threat of Sukuna for good.
- When he realized Jujutsu HQ sent Yuji to his death, when he is revived by Sukuna, he instantly realizes Sukuna is plotting something when he realizes he doesn't remember what Binding Vow he used with him, and keeps his death a secret to train Yuji in secret.
- When sensing Jogo is planning to attack him, he decides to leave the car and let Kiyotaka Ijichi drive all the way up to Principal Yaga so that he can instantly deal with Jogo and effortlessly beat him in combat as he misdirects his opponent, intending to use this as a learning experience for Yuji.
- When Hanami and some cursed users break into Jujutsu High, he finds a way around a barrier meant to keep only him out and then deals with one of the cursed users upon seeing the other run away and use Hollow Purple to nearly kill Hanami and force him to retreat.
- He deduces that there is a mole within either of the Jujutsu High Schools collaborating with the Disaster Curses, while rightfully trusting that Iohri Utahime is not the mole.
- When the Disaster Curses and Choso gang up on him, he frequently overturns their tactics to dominate the confrontation despite the many attempts they put to limit how much he can uses his power. The most impressive is when he tricked Hanami into fighting him by lowering his defensive aura, and then immediately reactivate it to reduce his enemy to a paste in a wall, and then activate Unlimited Void for 0.2 seconds to deal heavy damage to his enemies while ensuring none of the civilians die as his enemies attempted to use as an advantage to prevent Gojo from using such ability.
- Even when put on the Prison Realm, Gojo has inspired the deceased Suguru Geto to reject the will of Kenjaku, who is possessing his corpse, and then when that failed, he remains defiant to the people who sealed him while placing hope on his students to stop Kenjaku and Sukuna.
- When unsealed, he nearly kills Kenjaku and then challenges Sukuna for a duel, though it was justified as Kenjaku possessed the corpse of his best friend and Sukuna possessed the body of his son figure.
- Despite massacring the Jujutsu higher-ups, he did it because they have grown corrupt beyond repair as well as vengeance for their various actions throughout the series, expecting a reformed Gakuganji to ascend and set the Jujutsu society on a better path.
- Throughout his fight with Sukuna, Gojo has employed various tricks to catch Sukuna offguard and give major blows, even leaving him at the brink of death and inches away from victory. Sukuna had to take a serious gamble to finally slay Gojo, but even regardless earned his respect for being a magnificent opponent.
- Gojo also takes his death in stride, going out with a smile, reuniting with the souls of his friends (along with Toji Fushiguro) that he lost, and even offer some sympathy towards Sukuna's isolation.
- He also left various backup plans to his students, the most notable being allowing Yuta to take over his corpse, in the event he dies, that eventually sees Sukuna finally slain as well as the end of Kenjaku's plotting.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Is willing to put his students at risk of serious harm to develop their skills to defeat their enemies. The most notable are:
- Sending Toge Inumaki and Panda to Geto, knowing that he will harm and defeat them so that Yuta can unlock his potential and defeat Geto, although Gojo didn't expect Geto to kill Toge and Panda.
- Is the only person to support Yuta's plan to possess Gojo's corpse should he die, despite knowing the risks of him dying which is what made everyone else oppose such an idea.
- When Hanami, Jogo, Choso and Mahito flood his surroundings with civilians to have him limit his power, Gojo is willing to let civilians die at the hands of the cursed spirits to ensure his four enemies are killed instead of focusing on saving the civilians, although he does it remorsefully and apologizes for not being able to save everyone.
- Uses a domain expansion that can potentially kill civilians to make sure all the transfigured humans are eliminated, albeit he controlled it to simply knock all people unconscious than kill them.
- While these people ultimately deserved their deaths, the story and Gojo himself make it clear that he's willing to become the monster to mercilessly execute his enemies:
- Takes noticeable glee in Hanami's death.
- Massacres the Jujutsu Headquarters, knowing that it could potentially destabilize Jujutsu Society.
