As iron sharpens iron, sensei sharpens student.
~ Sensei Yang’s motto and most famous quote.
You never should have played with dark magic, boy. This Day of the Departed will be remembered as my night of the return.
~ Yang after manipulating Cole into stealing the yin blade and releasing the spirits of the ninja’s former enemies.
Yang: No, I’m afraid that’s impossible. The curse of the temple requires that at least one ghost remain behind as master of the house.
Cole: One of us has to stay here?
Yang: It must be this way.
Cole: Hey! What are you doing?
Yang: Settling my debts.
~ Yang sacrificing his chance to be free to save Cole instead.

Sensei Kodokuna Yang is a recurring antagonist in LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, serving as a minor antagonist in Season 5, a cameo antagonist in Season 6, and the main antagonist of the Day of the Departed special. He is a notorious sensei who mastered all martial arts and created the art of Airjitzu who desired to live forever and be remembered.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • He has a tragic backstory, he was a sensei who had mastered all the martial arts and even created his own called Airjitzu all alone without anyone which made him deeply insecure and wanting to become immortal by obtaining the Yin blade so he wouldn’t be forgotten, but instead the Yin blade cursed him and his students to remain as ghosts in his now defaced temple forever and desired friends he could call family and believed his students to be them and didn’t want them to abandon him.
  • He traps the ninja in his haunted temple and makes them go through a variety of attacks but in reality was testing them by making them face them face their greatest fears if they wanted the Scroll of Airjitzu.
  • When the ninja passed his final test by facing their collective fear Morro, he congratulated them for passing his test and gave them the Scroll of Airjitzu, but told them they had to get out of the temple if they wanted to reap the rewards and revealing he had enslaved his students and told the ninja they would join them unless they got out of the temple now.
  • On the Day of the Departed, he cryptically told Cole to “close the circle” when Cole was at the Hall of Villainy museum with the other ninja but was fading away. He then seemingly acted surprised and scared when Cole stole the Yin blade and came to kill him only for him to dodge Cole’s shot and make it strike his orb, freeing five spirits of previous enemies of the ninja to enact his master plan and imprisoning Cole and taking the Yin blade.
  • He revealed his history to Cole and how he masterminded his return by getting Cole to steal the Yin blade on the Day of the Departed so he could take it and use it to open the Rift of Return to revive himself which was only possible on the yin-yang eclipse on the Day of the Departed while having the spirits of the ninja’s former enemies freed so they could distract the ninja long enough for him to succeed.
  • He successfully opened the Rift of the Return and demoralized Cole to make him give up in trying to stop him by pointing out his friends had forgotten and abandoned him. However, when Cole’s friends returned and Cole unlocked the earth punch ability to shatter the yin blade and free Yang’s students from his control so they could leave and go through the rift to become mortal again, Yang realized his mistake and revealed his motives to Cole, lamenting how he got arrogant and that Cole must think he was a fool for having a petty desire to become immortal to be remembered only for Cole to sympathize with him and tell him his actions were pretty understandable and not petty and that he knew what it feels like to be forgotten but pointing out that Yang wasn’t a  failure and wouldn’t be forgotten as he created the legendary martial art Airjitzu.
  • When Cole tried to take him up to the closing rift so they could become mortal again, he pointed out to Cole that one ghost had to remain behind forever as that was the curse of the temple and sacrificed himself by launching Cole through the rift just before it closed while he would be destined to be cursed in his temple forever, telling Cole he was atoning for his debts and restoring his temple to its original condition.
  • When the ninja decided to move in to the Temple of Airjitzu as their new base and were celebrating at a campfire with Cole stating how there were no ghosts left to the group before looking back in the temple and winking at Sensei Yang who winks back, keeping his presence a secret between them.

What Makes Him a Baddie?[]

  • He used the yin blade to brainwash his students into remaining loyal to him.
  • While it was out of good intent to make the ninja face their fears to be strong enough to defeat Morro, he trapped the ninja in his temple for the night and used very questionable methods like flooding the room the ninja were in which would drown them to force the water phobic Kai to think of an escape or levitating blades to chase them with homicidal intent.
  • He released the spirits of five of the ninja’s previous enemies and convinced them to go kill the ninja to take the ninja’s place amongst the living. While he was actually only using the villains to distract the ninja long enough to enact his plan of opening the rift, he wasn’t concerned one way or the other if the ninja were killed.
