~ Shōgo Makishima on what a perfect plan is |
Shōgo Makishima is the main antagonist of the first season of the anime Psycho Pass. A mysterious criminal that is hellbent on attempting to destroy the Sibyl System, he serves as the foil of Shinya Kogami and also a Wicked Cultured Philosopher who claims on liberating human race from the oppressive Sibyl System that erases them from expressing their own individuality.
He's played by Takahiro Sakurai in Japanese, and by Alex Organ in English.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- While a very depraved villain, Makishima lacks any particularly revolting crimes, such as stomach-churning sadistic atrocities possessed by the 2 Pure Evils, Rikako Oryo and Toyohisa Senguji, and many of the other villains he finances, in which what all nasty atrocities they do Makishima is ultimately hands-off on as his clients always desired to do such crimes even before Makishima entered the scene. He is also pitted against a deplorable totalitarian regime, which while being slightly well-intentioned, lacks the charisma and likeablity of Makishima who exposes some truly sickening flaws and has posed many decent points on the value of a human soul and free will itself. One could easily root for him against the Sibyl system.
- He has a wicked cultured charisma and such a dedicated drive to his ideals that makes him a very fascinating character to watch, commanding every scene with his screen presence and refined and attitude, always cheerful and smiling (and not in a sadistic way), impeccably polite he is to ally and enemy alike, always quoting literature and philosophy while rarely ever losing his composure, all thanks to the impeccable delivery of both Takahiro Sakurai and Alex Organ's performances.
- Despite being ultimately a not-so-well-intentioned extremist anarchist, Makishima isn't motivated For the Evulz but out of genuine belief in his philosophy that humans are dark creatures deep down and that true freedom can only be achieved if humanity embraces their inner darkness, happily accepting death at the hands of anyone that would actually be willing to pull the trigger completely on their own free volition.
- Uses his charismatic nature to have people of dark hues finally embrace their true selves and using their crimes to attract the police attention to his long-running gambit, and when their flaws prove too fatal to his interest to their potential or outliving their usefulness, he orchestrates their elimination so they don't become liabilities to his plans.
- Out of a respect for his skills, he tests Enforcer Shinya Kogami by hiring Toyohisa Senguji and luring Kogami to one of Senguji's hunts, amused by him actually putting up quite the challenge and even killing Senguji and deeming him a worthy enemy.
- Organizes multiple riots all across the city to expose the truly sickening flaws of the Sibyl system and manipulate the citizens into following their dark nature and stop blindly following Sibyl. And this was all a mere distraction for his plan to break into Nona Tower where the Sibyl System is held.
- An especially impressive tactic done is creating helmets that can be used for the wearer to copy off other people's psycho-passes and thus, get away with their crimes.
- When a gang participating in the riots attempt to betray Makishima and gangs up on him, despite being completely unarmed, he manages to dominate the fight entirely and kill them all efficiently.
- He is an incredibly agile fighter that defeats the much bulkier Kogami in a fair fight.
- He has a Villainous Friendship with his right-hand Choe Gu-Sung, in which there is a mutual Undying Loyalty within both sides. Makishima pauses to praise Choe's genius, offers himself up as a distraction for the MWPSB to have Choe dismantle the Sibyl System, something he nearly wins, and he takes grave offense to the Sibyl system getting rid of Choe, in which almost immediately upon seeing the footage of his death, Makishima voices his utter contempt for Sibyl.
- When captured and interrogated by Chief Joshu Kasei, who is actually controlled by one of his old friends, Kozaburo Toma, and discovering the Sibyl system is actually a hive mind of criminally asymptomatic people, Makishima refuses their offer out of a genuine believer on his philosophy on individuality, using one slip up of words that he is in transit, escapes with ease after killing Toma in a gloriously satisfying fashion for being a selfish narcissist with a god complex, all with a simple book and other items in his environment, which is impressive considering Kasei is an incredibly advanced robot.
- After escaping, Makishima moves onto a Plan B, meeting Kudama Nobuaki, killing him and using his body parts to bypass the biometric secrity scan of the system and cripple Japan's main food supply and bring the country to its knees, nearly succeeding in his goal of plunging Japan to chaos.
- Overall, Makishima is waging a one-person war against an entire system, and the war was in his favour for most of the season, only defeated by the end, not thanks to Sibyl's machination, but only by Kogami, to which Makishima happily accepts his own death, happy he is at least killed entirely by the volition of another person & his hatred and formed an irreplaceable relationship.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
