Shirley the Medium is a recurring, supporting character in the Cartoon Network Horror Comedy animated series Courage the Cowardly Dog.
She is a poor Chihuahua fortune-teller trying to make a living in the land of Nowhere. She is prone to laying terrible karmic curses towards those who are arrogant or mean-spirited, which makes the stubborn old curmdugeon, Eustace Bagge, her primary target in the series. Snarky but ultimately well-meaning, she is one of Courage's main allies in the series, as she's always ready to help the dog, even with problems she has unleashed.
She was voiced by Mary Testa.
What Makes Her Magnificent?[]
- She is a very enjoyable character thanks to her quirks, her wisdom and her deadpan snarker attitude, especially towards Eustace, the "stupid one".
- She is very skilled at playing the saxophone, often using it to make her invocations even more dramatic.
- She is a very powerful magician, able to conjure very powerful, nigh-unbreakable spells, some even devastating in nature.
- Her curses only affect those who deserve them, usually Eustace and don't harm other, innocent parties, like Courage and Muriel, if not indirectly. When her victims learn their lesson, the curse is always undone and Shirley is shown to be happy with the learnt lesson, as seen with her smile in "Swindlin' Wind".
- She is one of Courage's only recurring allies in the show, always ready to help the dog, even if, as an empoverished merchant, she will still ask for payment.
- In "Shirley the Medium", when she is contacted by Eustace Bagge to comunicate with his deceased brother, Horst so that he can reveal where the key to open a box containing his money, Shirley warns the stubborn Eustace of how dangerous his meddling with the dead may be. When an evil entity within the box tries to abduct Eustace and Muriel, Shirley saves them by merely closing the box and takes a bill that flew out of it as her payment.
- In "The Curse of Shirley", she punishes Eustace's cruelty and lack of generosity by casting a rain cloud that permanently hovers above him, grows and grows with each act of selfishness or apathy and will only disappear once Eustace dones something generous for once in her life. When the curse drives Eustace insane, Shirley sells Courage a mirror that can help the old fool see his true self and act kind. This leads to what many consider to be one of the most heartwarming scenes in the show, as Eustace gives his hat to a sad, young vision of himself and lifts the curse.
- In "Record Deal", she helps Courage defeat Velvet Vic by suggesting he converts the broken vinil disk into digital, showing even as a magician she's savvy with technology.
- In "Swindlin' Wind" she punishes Eustace's scamming her by cursing him and Muriel to constantly swindle each other untill they show each other kindness.
- In "Muted Muriel", when Eustace's insensitivity made Muriel abstain from talking again out of spite, Shirley helps Courage by summoning a large, eldritch monster that will destroy everything in its wake until Muriel speaks again.
What Makes Her a Baddie?[]
- She uses dark magic to spread curses. Although the targets almost always deserve her wrath, innocent parties can be damaged by these curses by proxy and, in "Swindlin' Wind", she even punished Muriel for Eustace's misdeeds.
- In "Muted Muriel", she summons a large lovecraftian horror that destroys all in its path and would've even killed multiple people had Muriel not restarted talking and undone the spell.
- It's possible she has imprisoned Velvet Vic's soul in the disc.
Trivia[]
- She is the only canon Courage the Cowardly Dog character to be a Magnificent Baddie.
