The Kuroi Yōroi, also known as the Shredder, is the main antagonist of the 2018-20 Nickelodeon animated series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. A sentient armour by the Krang gifted to the desperate Foot Clan leader Oroku Saki, he swallowed Saki's soul and then corrupted the Foot Clan to be an imperialist force to be reckoned with. Becoming the biggest threat to ever exist on Earth, the Shredder's soul was sealed in the Twilight Realm by Saki's daughter, Karai, and the armour dismantled which the Foot Clan and Baron Draxum seek to rebuild. He was the archenemy of the Hamato Clan as a whole.
He was voiced by Hoon Lee.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Despite being Pure Evil, the Shredder lacks any repulsive crimes, the focus to him is being this cool, dominating juggernaut who gets awesome fight scenes, and this especially contrasts with the other purely evil villains in the series, the Krang trio in the movie whose evil are much more rubbed into the viewer's face as vile Social Darwinists who seek to enslave the universe through genocide and wipe out all weakness.
- Outside the extra-terrestrial Krang, of all Earth-based villains, it is easily the Turtles' most powerful foe the Turtles ever faced who dominates nearly every fight it had, and their encounter with the Shredder forced a permanent change in status quo, from new weapons to a new lair.
- Is able to transform the Foot Clan into a cult following his name centuries that still lasts centuries after the Shredder had been imprisoned in the Twilight realm, and making them a force to be reckoned with and nearly bring Japan to its knees during their conquest. It is made more impressive considering before the Shredder armour was given to Saki, the Foot Clan was on the verge of annihilation.
- Even though Karai manages to imprison him in the Twilight Realm for 500 years, unlike Karai who got weaker, the Shredder used his imprisonment to become even stronger than before.
- Upon his soul's release from the Twilight Realm, he is able to track down Karai to the Turtles lair and besieged it, forcing the Turtles to move to a new lair even after the Shredder's defeat.
- Sees through the Turtles' attempts to divert his attention from Karai, and then methodically breaks each one of their mystical weapons, or in Donnie's case, his AI assistant Shell-don who handles his weapons and technology.
- One impressive display is when he actually predicts where Leo will teleport to before breaking his mystical odachi.
- By taking advantage of a moment of hesitation, he is able to kill Karai, who was at this point the most powerful hero in the series despite weakened by centuries in the Twilight Realm.
- Easily overwhelms Baron Draxum's attempts to backstab and ambush him, and then takes advantage of his concern for Splinter's safety to force him to reveal the Empyrean.
- Even with the Turtles and a mystically charged April outnumbering and ambushing him, he is still able to come seconds from completing the ritual and absorb Splinter's essence, and thus become unstoppable in conquering the world, only foiled not by the Turtles, but by Cassandra Jones turning on him.
- Even with that as the heroes all combine their might, the Shredder is still able to overpower them, that had it not been for the final intervention of the spirits of the Hamato ancestors, the Shredder would've actually killed them all.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Swallowed Saki's soul and corrupted his Foot Clan to be imperialists that have laid waste to Japan in order to conquer it, before targetting Saki and Karai's home village.
- Kills Karai for her resistance against him and to regain his full strength.
- When that failed, he then tries to swallow Splinter's essence in a ritual.
- Uses Splinter's life as hostage to force Baron Draxum to grant him the Empyrean needed.
- Leaves both the Foot Lieutenant and Foot Brute behind to die despite their loyalty, beginning Cassandra Jones' hesitation to follow him any longer.
- Overall desires to reach his full strength and conquer the world, which has been stated to bring the extinction of not only humanity, but also endanger Youkai kind as well.
Trivia[]
- This version alongside Shredder from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers/TMNT crossover are the only two versions of Shredder to be MB.
