Sinestro is the main antagonist of Green Lantern: First Flight. He was the legendary paragon of the Green Lantern Corps and mentor of Hal Jordan who is revealed to have become disillusioned with the Guardians and secretly plotting their overthrow to replace the Green Lantern Corps with a more ruthless alternative to bring order to the universe.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He was the most brilliant Green Lantern to ever grace the organization’s ranks and accomplished his tasks with ruthless efficiency.
- He is a well-intentioned extremist who understandably became disillusioned with the state of the universe under the Guardians as crime had become rampant and believed the only way to instill order was through fear, believing the Guardians had become out of touch and the Green Lantern Corps too soft to do what was necessary.
- He swayed Green Lantern Boodikka to his cause.
- He can be quite snarky and is the source for a lot of funny one-liners in the film.
- He secretly enlisted Kanjar Ro to steal the yellow element from the Guardians while getting himself appointed to lead the investigation into the theft, thereby subverting his opposition from within.
- He volunteered to train new recruit Hal Jordan to see if he was worthy of joining the Green Lantern Corps, but in reality was trying to test him to see if he should join his vision with Boodikka and secretly had Boodikka befriend Hal to get inside his head.
- Once Kanjar Ro’s recklessness made him a liability yet Ro claimed that Sinestro still needed him to find the yellow element and the weaponers, Sinestro came up with a new plan on the spot, killing Ro and framing Hal for it while taking Ro’s Energi-Rod and using it and his ring to briefly revive Ro’s corpse and discover the location of the element and weaponers on the planet Qward.
- After Hal, Kilowog, and Boodikka confronted him, he had Boodikka reveal her true colors and incapacitate Kilowog but not kill him since his ring would fly back to the Guardians. He then offered Hal a final chance to join his vision and was disappointed when he refused.
- He went to Qward to successfully recover the new yellow battery weapon and he withstood the painful transformation process of the yellow ring to become the first ever Yellow Lantern.
- He easily wiped out the Green Lantern task force sent to get him while charismatically proclaiming a new day was rising before confronting the Guardians on Oa.
- He turned the Guardians attack on him against themselves.
- He easily engaged all the Green Lanterns on Oa while having the yellow battery devastate Oa and reach the Green Lantern Central Battery, overloading it and destroying the crystal to depower and decimate the organization.
- He successfully forced the Guardians and the surviving Green Lanterns to surrender and accede to his demands, forcing the Green Lanterns to give up their rings so he could destroy them as an extra measure.
- Despite Hal Jordan having absorbed the raw power from the green light crystal, Sinestro put one hell of a fight and ultimately forced Hal to deplete his energy and nearly kill himself just to send him plummeting to Oa and Sinestro nearly got up again had it not been for Kilowog crushing his hand and ring, defeating him once and for all.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Even before his fall, he was an anti-hero willing to torture suspects to get information, resulting in several of their deaths.
- He advocated for bombarding a crime-ridden planet with a meteor shower.
- He stole the yellow element with Kanjar Ro and later killed him and framed Hal Jordan.
- He murdered the Green Lantern task force led by Tomar Re sent to get him.
- He shattered the green light crystal, causing the deaths of thousands of Green Lanterns in space and decimating the organization.
- He nearly killed Kilowog and Hal as the only ones who refused to surrender to him.
