| ~ McBean introduces himself to the Sneetches. |
Sylvester McMonkey McBean is a major character in Dr. Seuss' short story The Sneetches. He is a "fix-it-up chappie" who exploits the star-bellied Sneetches' bigotry against the plain-bellied Sneetches, using his Star-On and Star-Off machines to trick them and take all their money.
He was voiced by Bob Holt in the 1973 cartoon adaptation.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- He is a very charismatic figure who charms the Sneetches into paying for his inventions.
- He is a talented inventor who built the Star-On and Star-Off machines from scratch.
- He heard about the plain-bellied Sneetches' problems and exploited them by offering to let them use his Star-On machine for three dollars each.
- When the star-bellied Sneetches wanted to be able to tell themselves apart from the plain-bellied Sneetches again, he tricks them into giving him even more money to use his Star-Off machine.
- He managed to get the Sneetches to constantly pay to have stars added and removed until nobody could remember who the star-bellied and plain-bellied Sneetches were, by which point McBean was a rich man and the Sneetches were broke.
What Makes Him A Baddie?[]
- Although his work did help the Sneetches overcome their bigotry, he still conned them out of all their money and left them bankrupt, even gloating about how gullible they were.
Trivia[]
