The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, also known as The Ghost of Christmas Future, is the main antagonist of Disney's 2009 performance-capture animated adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel with the same name, A Christmas Carol. It is the third Christmas spirit to pay Scrooge a visit to help him learn the errors of his ways after the Ghost of Christmas Past and the Ghost of Christmas Present, this time going with a far more ruthless approach than the previous two.
It is portrayed by Jim Carrey.
What Makes It Magnificent?[]
- It has a cool design, being a literal shadow for a concept of a ghost that represents the future.
- It gives off an intimidating presence with its silent subtle gestures, silent movements that make it hard to predict what it's going to do next, the horse carriage it rides with the horses being red-eyed to give off spiritually haunting vibes, and the way it slowly builds up things like the reveal of Scrooge's name on his grave before opening up the ground to send him to his grave.
- It does an effective job at terrorizing Scrooge while providing an epic chase sequence where it pursues Scrooge in his carriage driven by two nightmarish horses while keeping him on his toes in a manner that makes it look like his life is at stake as he tries to avoid them with him even being shrunken down for further emphasis on that.
- It does its job to humble Scrooge by making him learn the errors of his ways and become a better man in an effective way, selecting the exact right moments of consequences that are yet to come in the future if he is to remain the negative man he always has been to show him, showcasing him his own corpse being looted by his own maid with the assistance of a partner of hers, then showing him Bob Cratchit's situation where his beloved young child Tiny Tim has died and tries to conceal his grief while with his family before pouring his emotions (unknowingly onto Scrooge) while halting in the midst of the stairs before walking up to the room to mourn Tiny Tim, before showing him his grave and how he would die an unloved and unwanted man thanks to how he was in life and causing the ground to tear apart beneath him to cause him to fall into his grave, leading to him hanging onto a root while looking at his coffin as he sees fire beneath it and gazes into the spirit's looming eyes before falling in to finish making him want to change, also doing a good job at terrorizing him here too.
What Makes It a Baddie?[]
- It takes its time terrorizing Scrooge as much as possible, pursuing him through the streets of London on its nightmarish horse carriage and shrinking him down throughout all to make it look like his life is in danger and nearly getting him crushed by his surroundings, one of which involves the scene with him discovering Mrs. Dilber and Old Joe are looting his corpse where due to a rat being nearby him, he nearly gets whacked by the firepoker held by Joe aiming for the rat.
- During the moment where it shows Scrooge the situation with Bob Cratchit and his family where his beloved child Tiny Tim had passed away and Bob is trying to conceal his grief, the Ghost puts its hand on his neck to force him to watch the scene without looking away to behold the consequences of his actions.
- It effectively makes Scrooge's experience at the cemetery more traumatic and terrifying than need be, first by slowly building up the reveal of his name being on the grave, then causing the ground beneath him to open up to make him fall in it and witness fire beneath his coffin that is quite easy to assume is the fire of hell itself as he hangs on by a root and begs for a second chance, the ghost only looming in as it lets him fall into his coffin before he awakens to Christmas Day. While this was all done to make Scrooge learn the errors of his ways, it is still quite a ruthless approach to do so, particularly compared to that of the other ghosts.
Trivia[]
- It is the only version of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come to qualify as a Magnificent Baddie as the other versions aren't enough of baddies as they merely show Scrooge what will happen in his future whereas this version actively terrorizes him ruthlessly while doing so.
