NOTE: This page is only about the novel incarnation of Uglúk as the movie version of Uglúk was not voted a Magnificent Baddie, and thus only the book version of Uglúk's info and crimes should be put here.

You'll run with me behind you. Run! Or you'll never see your beloved holes again. By the White Hand!
~ Uglúk motivating his troops when they protest about the sun rising.

Uglúk is a minor antagonist of the 1954 book, The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers, an installment of the Middle-earth legendarium developed by British author, J.R.R. Tolkien, serving as the main antagonist of its third chapter, "The Uruk-hai". He is the leader of the Uruk-hai troop that was sent to capture Merriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, planning to send them to his leader, Saruman.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • Unlike most orcs, nothing implies he is xenophobic towards others.
  • Was able to have his troops lay low from the Rohirrim.
  • Was able to prove how charismatic he is by being able to rally up troops to his command
  • He successfully leads an ambush on Boromir, Merry and Pippin, successfully capturing them.
  • He manages to kill Boromir by swarming him with arrows, showing how tactical he is, as it is an impressive feat as Boromir was an excellent fighter. Uglúk even compliments him by calling him a "mighty warrior".
  • He is keenly observant over his troops, witnessing that his Uruk-hai troops have been mixed up with orcs of Moria, lead by Grishnákh, that are loyal to Sauron, Saruman's master, which is causing immense internal conflicts.
  • He successfully uses his intelligence by dispatching some of Grishnákh's troops and allowing most of the other orcs to flee if they want to kill Merry and Pippin, finally holding his troop together.
  • He heals Merry and Pippin from their injuries and was willing to feed them also.
  • Despite his rivalry with Grishnákh and having a temper, Uglúk never loses his cool and suffers a Villainous Breakdown, while able to handle his troops properly even despite it.
  • Though he talks roughly to his troops, Uglúk takes care of his troops, mediates internal disputes and motivates them to run during the sunlight, which orcs hate and normally avoid.
  • Unlike many of the orcs, when cornered by the Riders, Uglúk stayed to fight them instead of fleeing, with Eomer even dismounting to fight him sword to sword.

What Makes Him A Baddie?[]

  • As stated above, he still killed Boromir.
  • For his plan of holding his troops together to succeed, Uglúk beheaded some of Grishnákh's followers to cause a sense of dread to have even his opponents obey his orders.
  • Imprisons Merry and Pippin and plans to send them to Saruman for the latter to gain power.

Trivia[]

  • So far, Uglúk is the only Middle-earth villain from either the books or the films to be a Magnificent Baddie.
  • Only his book version counts as the movie version isn't even the initial leader of the troops, and was the one to have given the infamous "Looks like meat is back on the menu boys." line which was heavily mocked upon.
