The greatest villain was the one you never knew was there in the first place.
~ It takes a special person to have this apply to them twice.
Harumi Alive

Truly one of Ninjago’s greatest villains.

You know I wanted to propose her over a week ago on my birthday, but alas I had to wait until the newest Ninjago season was two weeks old and now here I am! This candidate has been on my mind for awhile and with Crystallized finally complete, I believe she has a pretty good shot as an MB, so without further ado, let’s discuss Harumi herself.

What’s the Work?

Ninjago is an ongoing animated science fantasy TV series based on the Lego brand of the same name. The story is set in the titular realm of Ninjago where Sensei Wu recruits a group of teenagers to train as ninja in the art of Spinjitzu and find the mythical four Golden Weapons to stop his evil brother Lord Garmadon and the numerous threats that soon follow.

Who is She/What Has She Done?

Harumi has proven to be the secondary antagonist of the Ninjago franchise (sorry Chen), serving as the secondary antagonist of the Oni trilogy, the unseen overarching antagonist of Season 13 & 14, and the secondary antagonist of Season 15.

She is the princess of Ninjago revealed to be the founder of the Sons of Garmadon, a cult dedicated to reviving Lord Garmadon, believing only he could rule Ninjago and get revenge on the ninja for failing to save her birth parents from the Great Devourer when she was a child. After seemingly dying, she would resurface in the final season as the herald of the Crystal King, the reborn Overlord, with the mission of helping the Overlord destroy the forces of good once and for all to end the conflict between good and evil to achieve peace.

She was once a normal Ninjago kid, living her life in Ninjago City with her loving parents. She was obsessed with the ninja from an early age, idolising them as heroes of Ninjago. When the Great Devourer was released by Pythor and besieged Ninjago City, Harumi and her parents rushed to evacuate, but while Harumi’s parents were able to get her to safety, they sadly didn’t make it. As Harumi was tended to by EMT’s, she overheard how the ninja weren’t the ones who saved Ninjago, but instead it was their arch nemesis, Lord Garmadon. This caused Harumi to believe that only Garmadon was capable of ruling Ninjago and sparked her lifelong pursuit of vengeance against the ninja. Harumi was adopted by the royal family of Ninjago, where she hid her true intentions by projecting an image of benevolence and quietness in public.

After Garmadon redeemed himself and died during the events of Master Chen and Morro, Harumi set forth her master plan to revive the dark lord without any good left in him in order to conquer Ninjago, believing his Sensei persona to be a weak disgrace. She formed the Sons of Garmadon, an underground cult composed of those that believed in her mission, and adopted the alias of the Quiet One. Slowly, but surely the Sons of Garmadon would gain steam throughout Ninjago and become a powerful criminal syndicate. Harumi would figure out that the three Oni masks would be able to revive Garmadon as she desired. She had the Sons of Garmadon track down and acquire a baby Master Wu with the map to the third Oni mask following his confrontation with Acronix and Krux. At some point, she sent an expedition to recover said third mask, but they never returned. By the time of the Oni trilogy, she began to make her move to recover the first two and acquire the third one herself.

She had the Sons of Garmadon steal the first Oni mask from Cyrus Borg, knowing this would cause the royal family to enlist the aid of the ninja in their upcoming speech, revealing themselves to the people of Ninjago. She staged a Sons of Garmadon attack there to use as an excuse as the Jade Princess to convince her adoptive parents to invite the ninja to the royal palace to guard the second Oni mask. There, she would introduce herself to them and quickly form a bond with Lloyd, faking romantic feelings for him (although ultimately some of it was genuine).

When the time was right, she activated explosives rigged from under the palace to blow and had the Sons of Garmadon launch a full scale attack to recover the Oni mask. After learning from Hutchins that the one everyone was fighting for turned out to be a fake and leaving with Lloyd and the real one, she purposefully “lost” the Oni mask to her lieutenant Ultra Violet while feigning concern and escaping with Lloyd on the Destiny’s Bounty. After learning her adoptive parents and Hutchins died in the palace attack (just as planned), she would join up with the ninja on their ship to locate the final Oni mask.

After Zane got Cole captured to infiltrate the Sons of Garmadon, Harumi informed Ultra Violet the truth to blow his cover and had Mr. E plant a bug on him after taking him down in order to later sabotage the ninja’s ship after Cole recovered baby Wu who was the key to the final mask. As Harumi pretended to bond with Lloyd, the ninja eventually discovered the encoded communication between the Quiet One and Mr. E, but Harumi convinced them to not descend to hasten a trace program designed to identify the Quiet One. Eventually the trap activates shortly after Cole discovers the map to the third oni mask was wrapped around Wu and the Bounty is downed onto the island with Harumi and Lloyd getting stranded on a separate part of the island.

As Harumi and Lloyd go to the temple and (supposedly) strengthen their romantic bond, Harumi has the Sons of Garmadon set out to track down the ninja at the downed Bounty. She specifically preys open Lloyd’s feelings about his father whilst proclaiming her infamous quote that the greatest villain was the one you never knew was there in the first place…the Quiet One. Eventually, they make it to the Oni temple with Harumi secretly yet purposefully trapping them inside while the Sons of Garmadon capture the rest of the ninja on the Bounty (who had discovered Harumi’s true identity).

The two locate the Mask of Hatred, but Harumi can’t grab it, deducing that only someone with Oni blood must be able to take it and signalling Lloyd to do so. However, just as Lloyd took the mask, he realised he never told Harumi he was part-Oni and while she first attempted to twist the truth, she quickly drops the facade and reveals how she improvised this plan after the ninja stole baby Wu from the Sons of Garmadon. They fight over the mask while Harumi reveals her motivations to Lloyd. Lloyd eventually throws the mask off a cliff, but Harumi gets it and puts it on before quickly leaving and activating traps to flood the temple with Lloyd still inside.

Harumi returns to the Sons of Garmadon, but suddenly the other ninja confront them and they get into a standoff. However, Lloyd returns, having survived and everyone is suddenly attacked by a crab like monster. Harumi takes advantage of the ninja fighting the monster to have the Sons of Garmadon retreat and hijack the repaired Bounty to leave the island. While Lloyd tries to stop them, Harumi captures him and the Sons of Garmadon successfully get away.

Harumi, now in her true villainous outfit, reveals to Lloyd how she had built the Temple of Resurrection under the Ninjago palace and brushed off the ninja’s survival as she had the insurance policy of Lloyd’s mother who she had captured after she found baby Wu. She gathers the final pieces for the ceremony and begins it, rejecting Lloyd’s attempts to reason with her. She successfully rips open the fabric between realms to contact an evil Lord Garmadon. However, the ninja arrive and a fight breaks out between them and the Sons of Garmadon with the ninja defeating Harumi and shutting down the ceremony. Harumi and the Sons of Garmadon are all arrested and Ninjago is saved…or so everyone believed as unbeknownst to all the ninja were too late and Harumi had succeeded in reviving Lord Garmadon.

After repeatedly refusing to talk to the police, Harumi is freed by a resurrected Lord Garmadon once he storms the police station and proceeds to enact their plan to conquer Ninjago. The two free the Sons of Garmadon and take control of Kryptarium Prison to draw out the ninja specifically Lloyd for a confrontation against Lord Garmadon in order to unlock his full dark potential to create and destroy. Once Lloyd bursts into Krypartium just as planned, Harumi has the security camera footage broadcast to the entire world so everyone could witness the impeding duel between Lloyd and Garmadon. It goes all according to plan with Garmadon absolutely wiping the floor with Lloyd for all Ninjago to see and the world going into a state of collapse and chaos with Harumi having Sons of Garmadon preparing to take control by dawn.

As the Garmadon and the Sons of Garmadon descending into villages, Harumi convinces Garmadon to erect a gigantic colossus to force the people to surrender. The villains then make their way into Ninjago City itself. They begin their conquest, destroying several buildings and overpowering the police. The original four ninja and P.I.X.A.L arrive to face the colossus, but despite their best efforts, they are forced to retreat. She then confronts a survived Lloyd retreating with baby Wu from Garmadon and attacks him with the Mask of Hatred, rejecting his appeals to reason. She deduces he lost his powers and offers him a chance to join her, but he naturally refuses. As the ninja arrive with the Bounty, Lloyd jumps and throws Wu to the others, but Harumi catches Lloyd. The two fight, but Harumi overpowers him just as Garmadon catches the Bounty, with Harumi forcing Lloyd to watch as Garmadon crushes the Bounty, (seemingly) killing the original four ninja and Wu. When Lloyd defiantly refuses to lose hope and Harumi prepares to kill him, he jumps off and escapes with his surviving allies. However, now the Sons of Garmadon have officially conquered Ninjago with Garmadon as emperor.

Under Garmadon’s rule, Harumi and the Sons of Garmadon hunt down most of the ninja’s allies. However, they fail to find Lloyd in their city-wide sweeps with Harumi informing Garmadon of this fact. As Garmadon proposes crushing the city to squeeze Lloyd and his allies out to crush them, Harumi convinces him not to as it would only cause the people of Ninjago to get desperate and rebel. Instead, she proposes sending Mr. E out to find Lloyd in a surgical operation. After Mr. E returns empty handed after nearly capturing the ninja, Garmadon executes him despite Harumi pointing out they didn’t anticipate the Elemental Masters returning to help the ninja at the last second.

Later, when Garmadon senses Lloyd is nearby, Harumi volunteers to lead the security of the Tower herself. However, the ninja are barely able to scrap by undetected and broadcast a message to Ninjago. Harumi sees the message and hijacks a computer to send a broadcast to Lloyd of his father beating him to demoralize him whilst having the Sons of Garmadon begin breaking down the door to the TV studio the heroes were in. However, Lloyd recovers to send a message of hope to the people of Ninjago and right when the Sons of Garmadon burst through, the resistance had escaped though she deduces from their garbage gateway trucks that their base is the garbage depot.

She uses said info to get Garmadon to spare her life so she can lead a secret ambush on the Resistance’s base. They single-handedly capture the entire Resistance with the exception of Lloyd, Skylor, Mystake, Darreth, and Nya. However, Garmadon had disappeared afterwards so Harumi went to find him, tracking him down to the Temple of Resurrection. Garmadon reveals how he couldn’t crush Lloyd and the others when he had the chance and revealed how he saw an everlasting darkness in the Departed Realm that even frightened him that threatened Ninjago. Harumi vowed to help him unlock his potential to stop this threat by pledging to be his honorary daughter/child instead of Lloyd with Garmadon accepting and having her go find the Green Ninja so they could destroy him together.

Harumi tracks down Lloyd with the Sons of Garmadon, but she is surrounded and captured by Lloyd and his allies. She taunts Lloyd and her allies with Lloyd eventually realizing she wanted to be captured, continuing to mock Lloyd’s heroism and leaving the heroes speechless with the rhetorical question of how they actually saw this conflict ending. Once the heroes had Mystake shapeshift into Harumi to infiltrate Garmadon’s Tower to get Skylor to absorb his power, Harumi improvised a plan to escape by sweet talking Darreth long enough to take him down and break free, confronting the disguised Mystake in front of Garmadon and the others at the Tower.

Harumi exposes Mystake and all hell breaks though Skylor is able to escape having absorbed Garmadon’s power, Garmadon traps and kills Mystake with the Sons of Garmadon following Skylor to hunt down the remaining heroes. Harumi and Garmadon discover their location, sending the Colossus to destroy them, but Skylor takes control of it and begins wiping the floor with the Sons of Garmadon before attacking the tower with the Colossus. Harumi advises a retreat as it wasn’t safe anymore, but Garmadon declares that he doesn’t flee so Harumi leaves herself, abandoning Garmadon.

Unfortunately for the heroes, Garmadon is able to regain control and a back and forth fight for control of the Colossus between him and Skylor leads to the Colossus crashing into the building Harumi landed on. Just as Harumi was about to escape the building, she heard a boy crying for his parents who were about to sacrifice themselves for him as Harumi’s had done long ago. Faced with a choice, Harumi ultimately chose to risk her life to make sure another family didn’t suffer the same fate as her, leading them to her escape route to escape though rubble collapsed before Harumi could escape as well. Harumi raced to the top of the building, but it was too late as the Colossus crashed into the building once more sealing her fate. She sorrowfully made eye contact with Lloyd just before the building collapsed, killing her and ending her story once and for all.

...Or so everyone (including Harumi herself) thought. In reality, Harumi was contacted in the void shortly thereafter by the Crystal King (secretly the notorious Overlord) with a proposition to become his right hand man due to her skill/courage and despite some initial reservations, she accepted and was therefore revived by the Crystal King. She was empowered by the shard representing the Crystal King to dig herself out of the collapsed building and escape. She took the Crystal King to the Oni temple and placed the shard on the altar, birthing a new base surrounded by purple crystals and revealing his true form as the Overlord. She refused to serve the Overlord due to his practically omnicidal intent, but ultimately changed her mind, reasoning that destruction/strife came from conflict and if she helped the Overlord destroy the light, there would finally be peace in the dark, officially pledging her allegiance to the Overlord.

She would build an army for the Overlord out of Vengestone by tracking down the ancient city of Shintaro, which had a nearly unlimited supply and paying King Vangelis for regular shipments of it, allowing him to mask Shintaro as the "perfect city", thereby making her the overarching antagonist of Season 13. Despite Harumi's warnings to Vangelis about receiving the ninja as visitors, he smugly refused to listen and was ultimately defeated by them during the events of the season, putting an end to his Vengestone operation. Therefore, she improvised and got the last amounts of Vengestone needed from more low-level criminals and sources.

Then in her new "Kabuki" persona, she begins recruiting various past enemies of the ninja including Aspheera, King Vangelis, and Pythor. She even visited Lloyd when the ninja were sent to prison on behalf of the Overlord to send a message of what she was doing. However, when recruiting "the Mechanic", Lloyd had secretly captured him and disguised himself as such to infiltrate the Council of the Crystal King. However, Harumi exposes Lloyd as an imposter and a battle breaks out. Lloyd is taken down and Harumi recites her all too familiar lullaby song and takes off her mask to reveal herself just before a horrified Lloyd passed out.

Following this, Harumi narrates to a captive Lloyd about how she survived and how she became the right hand of the Crystal King aka Overlord. Lloyd reveals how his feelings for her were true and that he tried to search for her after her presumed death, but Harumi rebuffs him. They get into a fight, but Harumi defeats him. Lloyd continues trying to reason with her and Harumi does have some inner conflict and feelings for Lloyd, but she rejects Lloyd’s pleas. When the other ninja come into the tunnels to look for Lloyd, Harumi reveals she had planted a swarm of robotic spider explosives as a trap for them and seemingly kills the ninja in front of Lloyd.

She offers Lloyd a chance to join her and the Overlord, but he obviously refuses and when Harumi baits him by threatening Wu, Nya, and P.I.X.A.L next, Lloyd unleashes his Oni side and breaks free to Harumi’s delight, but is ultimately subdued. Harumi has the Council of the Crystal King steal the Weapons of Spinjitzu and destroy the monastery, revealing this to Lloyd. She commences the ritual with the other villains, corrupting the weapons of Spinjitzu and reviving the Overlord.

After receiving a power upgrade from the Overlord, Lloyd stages an elaborate escape and Harumi and the others pursue him. However, Harumi is reluctant when the Overlord orders them to destroy him. Ultimately, Harumi misleads the others to get Lloyd to herself to attempt to convince him to join her once more, but from a more genuine caring side of her this time and trying to sway him to not jump off the flying fortress, but he jumps, taking her with him. They land on the old Oni island, but Harumi is able to escape and just as she was about to capture Lloyd once more, the heroes arrive in the Bounty, revealing themselves to be alive and rescuing Lloyd.

The Overlord reveals his new plan to Harumi to corrupt the ninja to control the powers of creation instead of destroying them and risking the powers finding new champions. As the villains begin their assault on Ninjago, Harumi detects the ninja approaching and despite her warnings, the Overlord brushes it off, only for the ninja’s vehicles to not be affected by Vengestone and a massive battle to break out. Harumi sees a returned Lord Garmadon and personally helps take down the Bounty with the villains conquering Ninjago and driving most of the heroes underground.

Later, Harumi intercepts a message from the ninja with a secret code referring to their whereabouts, but Harumi deduces their location at an old newspaper delivery warehouse and the villains with the Vengestone army surronding the resistance’s headquarter to commence the final battle. Harumi reports to the Overlord, but just then the Overlord is attacked by Lloyd and Garmadon. As the two heroes fight the Overlord, Lloyd once again pleas to Harumi to help them, but Harumi earnestly apologizes but reveals her belief that the heroes will never be the side to overcome the balance/strife.

As the Overlord transforms into his final form and subdues the heroes bragging how he corrupted the Great Devourer to provide him a vessel in the form of Garmadon, Harumi realizes the Overlord is to blame for her parents death and officially redeems herself, saving the heroes and assaulting the Overlord ruthlessly. With the power of the Elemental Dragon formed by the four original ninja, Lloyd is able to defeat the Overlord and Harumi evacuates with him and Garmadon from the collapsing base. Despite initial skepticism from the ninja, Lloyd vouches for Harumi and Harumi along with all the ninja’s allies help the ninja rebuild the monastery.

What Makes Her Magnificent?

Harumi is a proficient schemer and a solid contender for being the greatest mastermind in the franchise, especially considering how she is younger than the ninja (and probably the youngest actual villain in the series).

She founded the Sons of Garmadon gang from scratch and built them into a powerful criminal syndicate all whilst maintaining a facade of a quiet, obedient princess to the public and her adoptive parents. She even secretly constructed a temple underneath the royal palace in order to revive Lord Garmadon once she acquired all the Oni masks and Garmadon's relatives.

She discovered the location of the long-lost third Oni mask and trailed Misako so she could lead her to baby Master Wu to capture them both, so that when the time came, she could use Wu to retrieve the third Oni mask as only someone with Oni blood could retrieve it.

She orchestrated the successful heist of the first Oni mask by the Sons of Garmadon from Borg Tower and later invites the ninja as an excuse to her parents so she could gain their trust. Following this, she orchestrated the Sons of Garmadon attack on the royal palace to acquire the second Oni mask and eliminate the royal family in one fell swoop.

After Cole rescued Wu from the Sons of Garmadon, she exploited Mr. E brutally defeating Zane to improvise by having Mr. E install a secret bug on Zane and leaving him for the ninja to find so that the bug would sabotage the Bounty to crash onto the island carrying the final Oni mask, stopping the ninja from learning her true identity just yet and having the Sons of Garmadon capture them while she and a clueless Lloyd (who also had the Oni blood needed to retrieve the third mask) located the Oni temple with the third mask. She secretly sealed themselves in as preparation so that when she finally recovered the third mask from Lloyd, she could flood the temple and trap Lloyd inside whilst she escaped with the power the Oni mask gave her.

Of course, she ultimately succeeded in her plan to resurrect an evil Lord Garmadon, hijacked Krypatarium Prison to draw out Lloyd to face his father and get brutally defeated for all of Ninjago to see via broadcast on her part, and succeeded in conquering Ninjago which no villain had done before. Garmadon might have been the emperor and conqueror, but literally none of it would have happened if not for Harumi's patient planning and cunning. It was her who made Garmadon unlock the true potential of his powers of creation and destruction.

During Garmadon's rule over Ninjago, she carries out several near villain victories to defeat the Resistance culminating in her deducing the location of the Resistance's base and ambushing it, capturing nearly all of its members (and in fact probably all of them if it weren't for the sheerly miraculous luck of Darreth needing to go outside to use the bathroom and spotting the ambush right before it happened). She purposefully lets herself get captured by the heroes only to escape and expose their plan to Garmadon, leading to the death of one of the most powerful and last remaining members of the Resistance, Mystake.

Upon dying and being resurrected by the Overlord to serve as his herald, she shadows the ninja for years and organizes large scale, secret Vengestone black market operations with King Vangelis of Shintaro and once he was defeated, improvised to hiring smugglers, to procure enough Vengestone to build an entire army with not a single one of the heroes the wiser to the fact that she was even alive.

She manipulates past ninja enemies into agreeing to join the Council of the Crystal King to get revenge on the ninja for what they did to them. She exposes Lloyd's villainous disguise and counting on the ninja to go look for him, nearly destroys them in a trap (which only failed due to a sheer coincidence of a train specially built to be extremely durable happened to be there, seriously) along with acquiring the Weapons of Spinjitzu and destroying the ninja's base. She succeeds in reviving the Overlord and is thereby responsible for him overrunning and conquering Ninjago. She even deduces the location of the resistance's last hideout to begin the final battle.

Her magnificence is also greatly helped by her plethora of redeeming qualities. She has a tragedy of losing her parents that motivates her actions and played for sympathy, truly cared for Lloyd in the end, sacrificed her life in a moment of great honor to save a family from suffering the same fate as her, and redeems herself once learning the Overlord is responsible for her parent's death. I'd also argued that by the time of Crystallized, she was actually a genuine extremist as she really wanted to end conflict and strive, believing that only the darkness of the Overlord was strong enough to achieve peace and apologizing to Lloyd over it. She also picks up some comedic traits in Crystallized that make her more enjoyable to watch. Plus, even if she is implied to be a bad boss (more on that later), she did genuinely try to spare Mr. E from Garmadon's wrath. In the end, she is one of the most sympathetic and magnificent Ninjago villains in my opinion.

Mitigating Factors

If I am not mistaken, Harumi is still under the "Cowards" section on both Villains Wiki and Inconsistently Heinous Wiki. I even initially believed a while back, but after thinking about it for a while and with Season 15 finally complete, I disagree with this assessment and let me explain why.

Now the apparent basis for this claim is that she abandoned Garmadon during the fight between him and the heroes over control of the Colossus. Upon further inspection though, I don't believe this to be cowardice. See, Garmadon had lost control of the Colossus who wiped the floor with their forces and was climbing up the tower to crush both of them. I think the reasonable and pragmatic thing to do in that scenario would be to flee especially considering how she tried to convince Garmadon to leave with her (which I'd also use as evidence to show how this moment doesn't necessarily disprove Harumi's loyalty to Garmadon).

The moment that might demonstrate cowardice imo is when she (somewhat) pleaded for her life when Garmadon was going to kill her for failure, using info about the ninja's hideout to get Garmadon to spare her. Now this I think was undignified and if Garmadon had killed her there, I don't think she would have qualified. However, I believe this (and if you find the above to still be mitigating) is subverted in the following:

Most importantly, right after she left Garmadon during the Colossus battle when she was about to escape a collapsing building and was faced with a choice of saving a nearby family or herself, she chose to risk her life to save a random family at the ultimate cost of her own. Which btw as Crystallized shows us, it was genuine at the moment and it wasn't some elaborate ploy by Harumi who knew the Overlord would save her or something. No. She gave up her life in a moment of honor to save a family from dying. That I believe is a far more dignified death (or moment for that matter) than getting crushed out of blind faith to some leader. That is why I believe Harumi subverted any possible cowardliness, she sacrificed herself to save a random family from death despite having an extremely open opportunity to save her own skin. In Crystallized, she overcomes her fear to join the Crystal King and fearlessly/ruthlessly attacks him, the embodiement of darkness who she just watched torture the nigh-invinicible Garmadon and Lloyd to near death and comes the closest to defeating him in single combat, even slicing his hand off so there aren't any traces of her being a coward left in the new season.

In terms of any other potential mitigating factors, I don't think she has any. Like I guess you could say she was a "pawn" of the Overlord in the most technical term that the Overlord was using her to achieve his objectives, but Harumi willingly served him more like an enforcer anyway and it’s not like the Overlord was planning on betraying her or something. Importantly the Overlord didn't seem to know that the Great Devourer killed Harumi's parents as once he let loose that he was the one that corrupted the Great Devourer, Harumi turned against him in the blink of an eye and ruthlessly attacked him as previously mentioned, so even if she was a pawn, she counterattacked so she can still qualify.

Is She Too Much of a Baddie?

Well she conquered Ninjago twice and nearly destroyed the ninja and their allies several times. She also apparently sent a Sons of Garmadon expedition to their deaths while searching for the Oni temple, something which she never seems to show remorse for. Certainly not too bad for a villain even a Ninjago one. The major Kick the Dog moment from her comes in the form that she orchestrated the death of the royal family (her adoptive parents) and Hutchins, making her the only villain besides Kalmaar and probably Pythor to kill a relative. While that is a pretty uniquely heinous act, not only is it severely mitigated by her redeeming traits (and the fact that it is only brought up once afterwards), but there was pragmatism behind it. Keep in mind, her parents died while the Sons of Garmadon were attacking the palace to acquire the second Oni mask which was their main goal, but in the process they eliminated the rulers of Ninjago and thereby set the stage for Garmadon to eventually take control. Ruthless, yes, but also pragmatic and not simply For the Evulz or spite. Then there's the fact that there are several villains way less sympathetic than her like the aforementioned Kalmaar or her allies Overlord and I definitely think she isn't too much of a baddie.

Final Verdict

Yes to the "Quiet One".
