“ | You wound me, dear boy, of course I'll be plotting behind your back. I am going to deceive you, manipulate you and when I've gotten what I want... well... I'll let your imagination conjure up the gruesome finale. Your only hope of survival is that somehow the things I teach you will be enough for a twelve-year-old boy to outwit the world's most dangerous mind, before I render you to pieces like a wolverine with a squeak toy. | „ |
~ Argost to Zak Saturday in "Kur: Part Two". |
“ | Greetings and bienvenue, humanity! As the newspeople are no doubt informing you in breathless tones, at this very moment, armies of Cryptids are descending on every major world capital. This may seem frightening, but I assure you, it is very much under control. My control. If humankind wishes to survive this day, it must take its place with the rest of nature: At the feet of V.V. Argost! I wish I could see it all in person, but who could resist invading the United States' capital? I do have such a weakness for the classic monster cliches. | „ |
~ Argost to all of humanity in “War of the Cryptids”. |
Vincent Vladislav Argost, (more commonly referred to as V. V. Argost or simply Argost), is the main antagonist in the 2008 Cartoon Network Series The Secret Saturdays.
He is actually the Yeti of Himalayan legend (as revealed in the penultimate episode). He created a mask in his mountain home and went out into the human world to start a television series, find Kur, and dominate humanity and the world.
He was voiced by Corey Burton, who also voiced Megatron in Transformers: Animated, and Cad Bane in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Is a deliciously hammy and theatrical villain who even in his worst moments and actions, accentuates charm, no less thanks to the performance of Corey Burton.
- Is a very charismatic TV host of his own series "Weird World" that even when discovering that Argost is evil, Zak still watches his series.
- Used the souvenirs from his victims to try and gain a better understanding on the human world, eventually succeeding in learning English and enter into human society by turning a powerful half-cryptid named Munya into his minion and gaining funding for “Weird World” by designing a robotic body for a terrorist to use and hiding his true guise in order to find clues on Kur and conquer the world.
- Successfully stole the Kur Stone from the Secret Scientists' base by disguising himself as a member right as a fire was going on in the hopes of finding Kur.
- Setting up several defenses and traps when the scientists invade his base and while they were successful in stealing the stone it also claimed the lives of forty-three of them.
- Spent eleven years plotting to track down and steal the Kur Stone back from the scientists, eventually orchestrating several attacks on the scientists' bases and steals two of three pieces to try and reassemble the stone.
- Brainwashed Doctor Henry Cheveyo with a parasite to lure the Saturdays to his base and reveal the location of their base while throwing them off.
- Capturing the Saturdays in a deep jungle by using leeches that swiftly knocks them unconscious while stealing their piece of the stone, ties them up, and tries to use a variety of jungle cryptids to kill them and prevent them from getting back the stone. While killing them failed, he managed to get away with the stone and reassembles all the pieces in his base.
- Steals a powerful jewel from the city of Kumari Kandam by taking over the city and attacking the Saturdays and the prince while trying to start a war.
- Secretly orders Van Rook and Munya to steal a horn that Doc was hiding in the Saturdays base.
- Uses his well-renowned status to convince the townsfolk at Orsono to attack the Saturdays when he is on the verge of defeat.
- Steals a crystal attached to the Cherute’s three eggs while cleverly disguising it as though he wanted to steal the eggs themselves from the Saturdays.
- Uses cryptid matches as a diversion for the Saturdays while he enters Kur’s tomb and steals a tablet with Fiskerton’s face and body plastered onto the tablet.
- Lures the Saturdays to Switzerland by using a fake cryptid to successfully kidnap Fiskerton while using a hostage situation with Zak.
- Stalls the Saturdays with multiple traps when they invade Weird World long enough for Rani Nagi to confirm that Fiskerton can lead Argost to Kur and when the Saturdays get Fiskerton back he escapes by using multiple traps and gets the Saturdays out of the base.
- Invades Rani Nagi and the Naga’s home to steal a Kur detecting relic and while he’s eventually defeated he calmly flies home.
- Infiltrates the Saturdays’ base with a parasite that he can see through and controls them all at various points to learn the final location of Kur in Antarctica with Fiskerton’s help.
- Distracts the Saturdays when they break a huge cryptid that was initially believed to be Kur and manages to sneak into the cryptid’s body and uses leeches to take control of the cryptid from the inside and destroy the Saturdays in one fell swoop.
- Using his charisma, Argost convinces Zak to take him as his evil mentor, leaving subtle clues on Weird World to teach Zak about his new Kur powers and how to take better control of them, all while also making it clear he is going to deceive and manipulate him, in which he uses the hope that Zak would use Argost's teaching to outsmart him and survive to ensure Zak would accept the offer.
- Uses Bunyips to invade the Saturdays’ ship and destroy the engines, making the ship crash into Australia in order to test Zak’s powers to stop a dangerous creature in a mine and leads the Saturdays on a wild goose chase, in the end revealing that he was the monster all along and successfully convinces Zak to lie to his parents in order not to reveal the secret partnership and escapes in the process.
- Uses a fight between the Saturdays, the Secret Scientists, the Nagas, and the Legion of Garuda to swoop down and steal the Flute of Gilgamesh while nobody was looking and escapes with the flute.
- Throws Doyle off when he tries to find out about Argost’s past by kidnapping various people who has hints to his past such as Baron Finister and an orange ape-like cryptid.
- Uses his words to indirectly help save Zak, Ulraj, and Wadi when they get trapped in the mines and eventually gives Zak a parasite to contact him when in need.
- Betrays Zak Saturday after briefly brainwashing Fiskerton with the parasite by knocking him out with sleeping gas in his ship, using Munya to tie him up, bring Zak Monday back to Zak Saturdays’ Earth and steals powers and life force via a powerful smoke mirror and the Flute of Gilgamesh before attempting to do the same to Zak Saturday.
- Descends down on Washington D.C. and spreads his cryptid army across states, cities, and towns to try and conquer the world and steals a recording on the Flute of Gilgamesh, going to Weird World when he’s nearly killed by the Flute of Gilgamesh along with Zak Saturday.
- Uses his cryptid army to try and wipe out humanity when Rani Nagi convinces him to and offers a temporary truce that he will stop the cryptid invasion and let the Saturdays go free to Zak when he and the rest of the Saturdays invade Weird World again, with Zak accepting the offer.
- Protects himself with a sound-proof glass dome and successfully drains Zak Saturday’s Kur powers and life force without using physical force solely for the sake that the process is much more simpler, coming seconds away from successfully conquering the world.
- Although he can be petty at times and likes to laugh and taunt his enemies, the pettiness is relatively minor as he doesn’t randomly target innocents out of spite and he has the skills to back them up and he still has his charisma intact, thus proving that he isn’t too petty.
- Although he has two villainous breakdowns in the season finales when he orders Munya to kill the Saturdays and make them “hurt” and when he gets more deranged and mad when he stole the Anti-Kur powers, leading to him making a costly mistake, these do not harm his qualifications because he easily recovers from the first during the six month gap and is just as polite and calm about losing, and the second was understandable as he had the powers of the Anti-Kur within his frail and mortal body, and the massive amount of power the Anti-Kur contains hurts Argost badly and while it does contribute to his mistake that matter and antimatter don't get along and gets him killed, this can be granted a leeway as he has the power of basically God inside his body and he genuinely had no idea how the Kur powers would work against each other due to being in a sound-proof dome at the time.
- Despite being Pure Evil, Argost really doesn't engage in brutally sadistic crimes. He only ends up having the push to be heinous enough by the series finale in which Argost's worst crime being attempting to wipe out humanity wasn't originally part of his plan and merely wanted to subjugate them until Rani Nagi convinced him how humanity could rebel and overthrow him. Even in his vilest moments like when V.V. Argost admits to Drew and Doyle that he has killed so many humans that he can't recognize that their parents were his victims, it is all laced with Argost's iconic theatrical flair and charisma so it doesn't make Argost's acts too disgusting. It helps that Rani Nagi is an viler and crueler villain as well that straight up nearly destroyed life on the surface.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- He used to murder many tourists as a Yeti and kept mementos and souvenirs from them in his lair as trophies, with Drew and Doyle's parents as among his victims.
- When the Secret Scientists invade Weird World, he set up multiple dangerous traps, killing forty-three scientists in the process.
- Killed the king of Kumari Kandam to try and start a war with the Kumari and humanity, even starting to attack a city later on.
- Assisted Rani Nagi and the Naga in several nasty schemes.
- Had tried killing the entire Saturday family, including Zak who is just a child, on multiple occasions, once he tied them to trees and left them to be eaten alive by carnivorous cryptids and tried to use traps to do them in like he did with the secret scientists.
- Tried to conquer mankind with an army of Cryptids, and when Rani Nagi instead convinces him to wipe out humanity to ensure he's truly unstoppable, he willingly obliges and orders his cryptids to try and kill them all.
- Captured Zak Saturday and took him to a secret island planning to take the power of Kur (and his life-force) from him for himself so he'd be unstoppable and able to take over the world like he did with his alternate universe counterpart Zak Monday, and later succeeded in temporarily killing him, sadistically enjoying his pain.
