Oh, don't tell me you don't recognize your old pal Vex! You know...bringer of nightmares, master of the Uproar, life of the party.
~ Vex introducing himself to the inhabitants of Loom.
Well, you're just so adorable. That's why I saved you for last.
~ Vex about to kidnap Sackboy.
Look at the witless walking sack now, lost and confused. Maybe the plans you stole will tell you what to do next. You know, the plans I "carelessly" dropped? The ones that led you all the way here? I needed someone pure, you see. Someone who could collect all those Dreamer Orbs. It's the only thing that can bring the Topsy Turver to life. After all you've done, you're nothing but a glorified spark plug.
~ Vex revealing his manipulation of Sackboy.
You can't hold back the Uproar forever, Sackboy. As long as there are dreams, there will be nightmares.
~ Vex's last words to Sackboy.

Vex is the main antagonist of the 2020 platformer Sackboy: A Big Adventure. He is the Jester-like "Master of Nightmares" who seeks to spread Uproar using a device known as the Topsy Turver, seeking to corrupt Craftworld to chaos and later take over the Imagisphere. To do this, he kidnaps the residents of Loom and has them work on building the machine, leaving Sackboy to go and rescue them.

He was voiced by Richard E. Grant.

What Makes Him Magnificent?[]

  • He has a fun, hammy yet sinister performance by Richard E. Grant, alongside having some very expressive animation and a ton of snarky quips at Sackboy's expense, making him a very memorable villain.
  • As soon as he arrives at Loom, he wastes no time sucking up its civilians for his plans.
  • Throughout the game, he stays one step ahead of Sackboy, either engaging them personally in challenging boss battles or having his minions take them on in his stead. Either way, all of them end with him escaping to continue gathering resources for the Topsy Turver.
  • In Interstellar Junction, he takes time to infect its Creator Curator, N.A.O.M.I, with a virus that slowly takes her over, causing her to obey Vex and attack Sackboy throughout the world.
  • After Interstellar Junction, Vex reveals his trump card: he intentionally dropped his plans for Sackboy to snatch up and motivate them to collect Dreamer Orbs, which are the only things that can power the Topsy Turver. After revealing this, he steals all of them from Sackboy and activates the Turver, successfully throwing Craftworld into chaos and enacting part two of his plan, which is to uproot the Tree of Imagination and rule over the Imagisphere like a god.
  • By the time Sackboy arrives at the Tree of Imagination, Vex and the Topsy Turver are in the process of uprooting it, with Vex coming closer to victory than any other antagonist.
  • When Scarlet tries to explain her plan to Sackboy, Vex hits her with an energy blast, depriving Sackboy of their closest ally.
  • It takes two boss battles and a whole level filled with traps to beat Vex, with him showing determination to finally win.
  • While mildly panicking over his destruction, he couples it with a boast about how as long as there are nightmares, Vex will return, a claim backed by both Scarlet and the post-credit scene, which depicts him back to his usual bombastic self, so it isn't too bad.
  • While some of his actions (making the residents of Loom work for him and throwing Craftworld into chaos) sound too bad on paper, the game's incredibly kid-friendly nature prevents him from really crossing a line, with the capturing of the residents barely being dwelled upon and the effects of the Topsy Turver being fairly tame in its effects, rendering the rest of his actions as generic villainy even if he is sadistic about it.

Is He A Baddie?[]

  • Kidnaps the residents of Loom and has them work on the Topsy Turver
  • Travels around Craftworld stealing its resources to power his machine.
  • He's incredibly proud of being a power-hungry supervillain, often boasting about how he loves terrorizing others and causing chaos.
  • Tries to kill Sackboy multiple times.
  • Corrupts N.A.O.M.I using a virus, having her attack Sackboy throughout Interstellar Junction.
  • Successfully throws Craftworld into Uproar induced chaos, even if only temporary.
  • Nearly replaces the Tree of Imagination and achieve godhood.
  • Blasts Scarlet when she tries to help Sackboy before the final battle, knocking her out.
