“ | I have no fear of death. It just means dreaming in silence. A dream that lasts for eternity. | „ |
~ Vincent Volaju to Spike on the monorail. |
“ | Know much about purgatory? It's the place between heaven and hell, where those who were left behind, unable to get into heaven continue to suffer, a place of struggle and pain. In other words, the world that we're in now. | „ |
~ Vincent Volaju to Murata. |
Vincent Volaju is the main antagonist of the Cowboy Bebop movie Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door. Once a mere soldier fighting in the Titan War, Vincent was subjected to horrific experiments that made him lose memory on who he used to be and that he is dead, becoming a nihilistic terrorist seeking to find the door out of Purgatory.
He was voiced by Tsutomu Isobe in Japanese and Daran Norris in English.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Has a tragic backstory on having born with nobody except Elektra caring for him, and upon becoming a simple soldier whose sense of identity was destroyed as a result of the experiments he was subjected to, as a result, forgetting who he was entirely and coming to believe he is either trapped in an endless nightmare, or that he is dead, in which all of his actions are him trying to "find the door and leave". Ultimately he is a lost soul trying to find direction in life.
- Oozes with charisma, always being polite as he muses over his philosophies and world-points and offering up "helpful" advice to his compatriots while being a skilled player of Chinese Solitaire.
- Gives out multiple awesome quotes, made even more awesome by the imposing performance by Daran Norris.
- Uses bribery and manipulation alike to conscript Murata and Lee to his cause before skillfully eliminating them when they endanger his plans, the latter especially being very satisfying due to him being a childish psychopath who joined in Vincent's scheme for fun and infamy whose For the Evulz nature has put a wrench on his plans.
- With nothing but just 2 men, his nanomachines and his smarts, Vincent carefully organizes multiple terrorist attacks to throw Mars into a state of frenzy, and always manages to escape undetected and remain a step ahead of all the heroes..
- His wits are only met with his strength, having been one of the very few characters to take on Spike one on one and take him down.
- Using the nano-virus bomb he intended to use, Vincent manages to escape gunpoint by Elektra.
- Diverts the government's attention, tricking them to believe he is dispersing the nanovirus through the water, when in actually hiding it in the balloons of the Halloween parade, to give an opening for him to commence his plan and nearly succeed.
- Is willing to spare the lives of the chosen few who he believes have enough willpower, having saved Faye's life when she ends up infected and offering her a chance to join her life, before leaving her alive as he's impressed she still refuses to join him even under the threat of death, and even has Spike spared for a final confrontation as he is impressed by his courage..
- Once he remembers who he was, he allows Elektra to shoot him and accepts his own death with dignity, using his final words to tell Elektra how falling in love with her made him feel the closest to being alive.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Sought to use a nanovirus to wipe out all life on Mars.
- Blows up a truck filled with the nanovirus in the middle of a metropolitan area and spreading it, killing at least 72 and infecting hundreds with the virus. He then blows up a monorail that sees even more casualties.
- Doesn't care when an attempt to shoot at Spike kills an innocent bystander instead before using a nanovirus bomb that kills the remaining passengers of a monorail.
