🎵 I once thought this whole world was blind! Now I see, the task to stop all humankind... falls to me! This next experiment will be... interesting! Now you will feel the void as well... beckoning! 🎵
~ Gaster during the chorus.
Such DETERMINATION... if only I had some, when it mattered... Oh, well. That's fate, I suppose. Now then... time to change ours. Shhhhh.... do you hear that? That's the call... of the void.
~ Gaster at the end of "Dark, Darker, Yet Darker".

W.D. Gaster is a major antagonist in Undertale the Musical, serving as the main protagonist of the song "Dark, Darker, Yet Darker", and the overarching antagonist of Deltarune the (not) Musical.

He was the Royal Scientist before Alphys and the creator of the CORE, who was erased from existence and forgotten by everyone after falling into his creation.

He was voiced by Tom Previte.

What Makes him Magnificent?[]

  • He was a brilliant scientist who created the CORE. While creating the CORE was also what ultimately "killed" him, he says this was his one mistake, implying he was very successful and never failed at anything beforehand.
  • He is very protective of his children Sans and Papyrus, and the reason why he returned from the Void to kill Chara was to avenge his sons.
  • He quite literally makes himself exist again to fight Chara and avenge his children.
  • Throughout the fight, he messes with the rules of time and space and delivers a brutal battle where Chara couldn’t even land a single hit on him.
  • Despite claiming to be insane, it doesn't affect his magnificence in any way.
  • While he himself also gets his hands dirty, he's disgusted by the fact Chara committed genocide.
  • At the very end of the song, he once again breaks reality to make Chara stab and kill themselves. He would then trap Chara in the Void, and use their DETERMINATION to rewrite fate itself, stopping the war between humans and monsters and freeing the monsters from the Underground, letting them live on the surface. While not confirmed, this also lines up with what we see in Deltarune, which implies that, at least in this continuity, Gaster created a whole new universe, which would also make him the overarching antagonist for the entire (not) musical.
  • He has a tragic backstory of being erased from existence and forgotten by everyone, including his sons, only to watch as they're killed, unable to do anything until they're long gone.
  • "Dark, Darker, Yet Darker" is an amazing song and considered to be one of the musical's best.

What Makes him a Baddie?[]

  • His wording throughout "Dark, Darker, Yet Darker" heavily implies he will commit genocide on humanity. That said, he also talks about freeing the Underground and stopping the war, which implies he does it for a well-intentioned reason.
  • He was explicitly stated to be the one who drove Spamton insane, as well as the puppeteer behind the strings his NEO form has. This also makes him responsible for Jevil.
  • It's implied he is the Knight that has been creating the Dark Fountains.
  • If he really did create Deltarune by using Chara's DETERMINATION, then he, even if with good intentions, had destroyed an entire world to create a new one.

Trivia[]

  • He's the only Undertale the Musical character to be a Magnificent Baddie, and the only one to come from a Man on the Internet video.
