Ivan Vanko, better known as Whiplash, is the main antagonist of the 2010 superhero film, Iron Man 2, the second film in the Iron Man trilogy and the third Marvel Cinematic Universe film overall.
He is the son of a physicist named Anton Vanko, who worked with Howard Stark but was deported to Russia when he tried to sell the arc reactor. Being raised by an alcoholic father in Siberia, Ivan becomes a physicist himself and plans revenge on Tony Stark - Howard's son - when his father dies.
He was portrayed by Mickey Rourke.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- Compared to Obadiah Stane and Aldrich Killian, he is rather sympathetic as his goal is for the purpose of avenging his father.
- He is implied to be tragic since it has been stated that his father became an alcoholic after he was deported implying that he may have been the victim for child abuse, and yet he still loved him anyway.
- Creates two pairs of electrical whips that are shown to be capable of cutting through material like racecars.
- Disguises himself as a racetrack worker to sneak onto the racetrack.
- Comes close to killing Tony Stark twice where when he is defeated both times, he laughs and says that Tony loses.
- Escapes from prison with the help of Justin Hammer by knocking put a prisoner that shares the same cell number with him and leaving him to die in an explosion. He later knocks out a guard who tries to stop him.
- Manages to get Justin Hammer to get him a new bird while using his partnership to usurp Hammer and take over his armor suits to turn them into drones.
- When Hammer leaves him in the care of two guards and takes his bird away, Ivan manages to kill the guards and get his bird back.
- Takes over Hammer's tech expo with the drones by hacking into them and Rhodes' suit and uses them to try to kill Tony.
- Escapes from his room before Black Widow and Happy Hogan could reach him.
- Creates an Iron Man suit that nearly kills Tony and Rhodes.
- Cares for his father despite his abusive treatment as well as his pet bird, as he cries when his father dies, and is shown to fondly feed and fondly pet the bird with him asking for his pet bird.
- He's very eloquent and affable in general. Despite hating Tony, he still engages with him in conversation in an amicable manner.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Stole and tried to sell Plutonium weapons.
- Slashed several racecars in half when trying to kill Tony at a racing track, potentially killing several drivers.
- Broke out of prison while leaving a fellow inmate to die in a explosion and knocking a guard.
- Killed two of Hammer's Security guards who were just doing their job of watching over him.
- Hacked into Hammer's and Rhodes' suit drones so he could kill Iron Man.
- Have his drones launch attacks all over the expo to kill Iron Man which endangers several people including Peter Parker, a child who was mistaken by one of his drones for Tony due to wearing an Iron Man mask.
- Tries to strangle Tony and James to death with the electrical whips.
- Blows up the expo in one last attempt to kill Tony and Rhodes, also taking his own life in the process.
