~ Will when Elizabeth Swann says saving his father is a lost cause. |
William "Will" Turner Jr. is the deuteragonist of Disney's Pirate of the Caribbean franchise. He is Elizabeth Swann's husband, the son of Bootstrap Bill Turner, and the father of Henry Turner.
He was a former blacksmith in Port Royal who teamed up with Jack Sparrow after Elizabeth was kidnapped by Captain Hector Barbossa to rescue her. He later teamed up with all three in an effort to defeat both Lord Cutler Beckett and Davy Jones, as well to save his father, ending with Will becoming the captain of the Flying Dutchman.
He was portrayed by Orlando Bloom.
What Makes Him Magnificent?[]
- For starters, he's easily the best swordsman in the entire franchise, having spent about half his life practicing with swords three hours a day while growing up as a blacksmith's apprentice in Port Royal. He even taught Elizabeth how to swordfight during their engagement in-between the first and second movies.
- Speaking of which, he's also great at sword throwing, a feat that no other fighter in the series has ever been able to perform. In just the first movie, Will prevents a wanted fugitive, Jack Sparrow, from escaping Mr. Brown's blacksmith shoppe by jamming the door shut with a single sword throw, which even Jack himself calls "a wonderful trick." Will repeats that same trick to save Jack from getting hanged at the end of the movie, throwing a sword beneath his feet to stop his fall.
- He's a relatable, charming, and well-meaning gentleman (played by the equally charismatic Orlando Bloom no less) who, despite being snarky at times, repeatedly goes out of his way to help the people around him, such as Elizabeth, Bootstrap Bill, his fellow pirates, and even Jack sometimes. This makes him arguably the most likable character in a series surrounded by piracy and dishonesty, or at least the easiest to root for.
- He breaks Jack out of a prison cell that he helped build, lifting the locked door with half-pin barrel hinges free using nothing but a bench. Even Jack is impressed and remembers this trick to escape the Flying Dutchman two movies later.
- He plays probably the most pivotal role in defeating Barbossa and his crew at the end of the first movie, lifting their curse at just the right moment and thus allowing Jack to have his revenge by killing Barbossa.
- After having him and Elizabeth's wedding night interrupted by the East India Trading Company, Will bargains his way out of prison by making a deal with Beckett, agreeing to bring Jack and his compass (which points to whatever the current holder wants most) back to Port Royal in exchange for Elizabeth's freedom.
- After Jack tricks him onto the Flying Dutchman to square his debt with Davy Jones, Will tricks Jones into revealing the location of the key to the Dead Man's Chest by challenging him to a game of liar's dice. He then successfully steals the key from Jones before escaping the ship while the whole crew's sleeping.
- He survives two Kraken attacks in the same day, unlike Jack who doesn't even survive one:
- On the Edinburgh Trader, Will climbs up to the mast of the ship while the crew makes a vain attempt to fight the Kraken with nothing but spears, axes and guns. Despite the attack being primarily targeted against him for stealing the key, Will becomes the sole survivor just by being smart (and is visibly disturbed watching his rescuers die horribly) and then hitches a hide to Isla Cruces by sneaking back onboard the Flying Dutchman.
- On the Black Pearl, while Jack is busy stealing the last boat and leaving everyone else to die to save his own ass, Will takes charge and leads the captain's own crew in a fight for survival against the Kraken, using perfectly-timed cannon blasts to damage its tentacles by hitting their lowest nerves. He then manages to weaken the tentacles yet again by loading the net in the cargo hold with explosive kegs of rum and gunpowder.
- He plays a pivotal role in helping Barbossa rescue Jack from Davy Jones' Locker, making a deal with Sao Feng to give him the Mao Kun Map, along with a ship and a crew.
- He commits an attempted mutiny on the Black Pearl after rescuing Jack with the aid of Sao Feng, successfully rounding up the entire crew sans Elizabeth. If only it wasn't for Sao Feng betraying Will at the last minute, the latter probably would've had a longer reign as captain of the Pearl and thus used it to save his father.
- After this plan fails, resulting in Elizabeth's capture and later promotion as the Pirate King, Will reunites with her by making a breadcrumb trail with the corpses of EITC soldiers, leading Beckett to Shipwreck Cove using Jack's compass, and then exchanging himself for Jack during parlay.
- In the end, he's ultimately the one who defeats Davy Jones and Cutler Beckett. After inciting the wrath of Calypso to kickstart the epic maelstrom battle near the end of At World's End, Will (albeit with Jack's help) stabs Jones' heart, killing and replacing him as captain of the Flying Dutchman while also fulfilling his promise to save his father, upon which Will uses the Dutchman to destroy the HMS Endeavour, killing Beckett and forcing the rest of the East India Trading Company into retreat.
- He has the happiest ending in the entire series, becoming a more benevolent psychopomp for over two decades across the ocean before reuniting with Elizabeth, his childhood sweetheart whom he married in a maelstrom and then had a son with.
What Makes Him a Baddie?[]
- Throughout the trilogy, it's repeatedly shown that Will, despite having good intentions (saving Elizabeth and Bootstrap Bill), doesn't compromise, crosses lines and breaks laws just to get himself one step closer to his own goals. Examples are:
- Breaking Jack, a wanted pirate guilty of multiple crimes, out of prison.
- Dueling Jack and Norrington almost to the death over the Dead Man's Chest.
- Endangering and betraying his fellow pirates to Sao Feng and the EITC.
- In The Curse of the Black Pearl, he angrily holds a sword to Jack's head just for saying that his father was a pirate rather than a merchant sailor who obeyed the law, similar to what Will had been told as a child.
Trivia[]
- In a deleted scene for Dead Man's Chest, the liar's dice sequence with Davy Jones lasts two rounds, the first of which Will actually wins while wagering 100 years of service against his father's freedom. Will then challenges Jones to another round by wagering an eternity of servitude against Jones' key, during which Bootstrap Bill joins the game, matches Will's wager and loses on purpose in order to protect his son despite it rendering Will's first victory meaningless. Had this been kept in the movie, it would've made Will even smarter.
