Ymir is a supporting character of the anime/manga series Attack on Titan. She serves as a minor supporting character in the 104th Training Corps arc, the Battle of Trost District arc, and the Female Titan arc in the manga, and Season 1 of the anime adaptation, a major character in the Clash of the Titans arc in the manga and Season 2, and a posthumous character onwards.
She is an Eldian of Marley who was an orphan ever since she was a child, which made life difficult for her to live since she was unable to find good food or a place to sleep in before being taken in by a scammer who took her to a cult and presented her as a member of the Fritz royal family to said cult when she actually isn't. This would lead to her being named after Ymir Fritz and worshipped by the cult who would look to her in their needs before one day, they all get caught by the Marley's Public Security who would parade them in ropes amongst the crowd that would jeer them for their Eldian heritage before they all get turned into Titans from Titan serum injected into them. Ymir herself would go through this endlessly for days, describing it as an endless nightmare before mindlessly devouring Marcel Galliard whilst in Titan form to which she would turn back into her human form with her Titan powers. She would then enter the walls of Paradis where she would become a hobo and a petty criminal before deciding to enter Survey Corps where she develops a relationship with some friends, even developing a romantic one with Krista who would later be revealed as Historia.
She is voiced by Saki Fujita in the Japanese sub and by Elizabeth Maxwell in the English dub.
What Makes Her Magnificent?[]
- When Conny tells of how his village got destroyed, she expressed condolences for what happened, though he explains that nobody got hurt despite the destruction caused and she does laugh at and mock him when he explains that he thinks his mother may be a Titan. She then teases him for thinking his mom is a Titan to throw him off the subject.
- She, Krista/Historia, and Conny save Reiner and Bertolt from a Titan in the tower by pushing a cannon down that ends up killing it.
- She helps kick another titan in the tower out of a window after Reiner put it down on the ledge.
- She deeply loves Krista/Historia, telling her to live a life she could be proud of (also having her promise it too) which she also tells her later on before going to fight off Titans while admitting she has no place to do so and it's more of a hope, stopping her from risking her life to bring Daz back to the cabins during the winter and bringing him back herself in Titan form, and overall consistently displays a strong romantic relationship with her throughout the series, often showing just how deeply she cares for her, even trying to take her with her, Bertolt, and Reiner and being willing to allow her to go back before saving Reiner and Bertolt.
- She manages to sneak inside a church and survive off the food within for a week while overhearing rumors regarding Krista/Historia.
- She throws Krista/Historia into the snow which she would be covered by before quickly transforming into her Titan form and bringing Daz, who was unconscious and tied up, back to the camp in time, saving him, while preventing Krista/Historia from discovering her Titan abilities, also stopping her from risking her life to save his in the process as well.
- She transforms into her Titan form and swiftly takes out the Titans surrounding the tower using her Titan abilities before destroying the tower by causing it to collapse while taking all of the remaining survivors, her friends and Krista/Historia, on her Titan to escape, though some Titans survive and while she manages to kill a few, some Titans overpower her and she goes out fighting, though she survives the outcome in the end.
- She has a sympathetic and tragic background, having started off as an orphan that wasn't able to find good food to eat and slept on the ground before being taken in by a family that has her be worshipped by a group of Eldians who believed in Founder Ymir and that she had inherited her blood from her and will grant them immortality with her mere presence while having to represent their needs, having always felt that she had no say in the matter and no choice and while she initially didn't deem it all that bad due to feeling what it was to be needed and that she meant something to someone else before they all were captured by Marley's Public Security before one of them labels Ymir as the scapegoat of their problems, lying that she told them the blood of Founder Ymir flowed in her and that they're only guilty of believing her to which she reluctantly went along with before they were paraded in ropes while the crowds jeered them for their Eldian heritage and they were turned into Titans. Ymir would be traumatized by all this, describing it as an endless nightmare before eventually reawakening after consuming Marcel in human form with her Titan abilities.
- She manages to enter the Soldier Brigades and ensure that she remains safe for years while manipulating the troops that she was a member of and keeping her Titan abilities hidden for a long period of time.
- She gets Reiner and Bertolt to allow her to get Krista/Historia by withholding Bertolt while using his ODM gear, knowing that any other time the two would outclass her though since her Titan's form is more agile, she could leap through the trees, grab Eren, and rendezvous with the Scouts, threatening to throw their whole plan out of whack if they don't take Krista/Historia.
- She turns into her Titan form and manages to get Historia through using her Titan to capture her in her mouth before escaping and successfully heading back to Reiner and Bertolt due to the amount of love she had shown her in spite of the person she had been.
- She manages to fight off some of the Titans attacking Reiner and Bertolt.
- She decided to save Commander Erwin when he was in danger of being attacked by a Titan.
- She saved Reiner and Bertolt from being devoured by the Titans and takes them to a town, willingly surrendering herself to them, sympathizing with them for the stuff they've been through as well.
- She writes a final love letter to Historia, confessing her only regret is that she didn't marry her before allowing Reiner to kill her to take her Titan powers.
What Makes Her A Baddie?[]
- She attempted to convince leaving Daz, a troop Krista/Historia was carrying back to camp through the winter snow, to die and initially suggested they do this so that they can make it back to camp.
- She kept information about her Titan abilities hidden, even though she could have used these abilities to save many lives and humankind might have gained a lot from knowing what she's been keeping to herself.
- She was seen in a brief frame stealing bread from someone while in the walls.
- She decided to betray the Corps to kidnap Historia and take her along with her, Reiner, and Bertolt, even trying to stop them from getting Eren, who was kidnapped by the latter two, back.
- She seemed prepared to kill Mikasa when she prepared to kill her to save Eren, with Historia convincing Mikasa not to do so.
