“ | Awaken my child, and embrace the glory that is your birthright. Know that I am the Overmind; the eternal will of the Swarm, and that you have been created to serve me. | „ |
~ The Overmind to one of its Cerebrates. |
The Overmind is one of the main antagonists of the StarCraft franchise.
It is the original leader of the Zerg Swarm, containing within itself every collective intelligence of the species as their governing hive mind. It is one of the most ancient, most evolved and most psychically powerful Zerg units and the one who triggered the conflict of the first Great War.
It is voiced by Paul Eiding.
What Makes It Magnificent?[]
- It has a tragic backstory because it was created by Amon with the specific purpose of leading the Zerg and ending all life in the universe. To ensure its loyalty, Amon placed an overriding directive to enslave it making it a prisoner in its own mind.
- It has moral agency issues due to being created specifically to wipe out all life in the universe which means that its actions no matter how horrible can't be held against it.
- The Overmind loves the Zerg in a strange way. It views them as its "children", calls Kerrigan "daughter" after her transformation and shows affection for her and the player Cerebrate. The reason why it butchers entire civilizations and wants to consume all life is because it wants to make the Zerg stronger and increase their chances of survival. It also tries to nurture the Cerebrates (the Zerg generals) into being smarter and more strategic to increase the Zerg's chances of survival.
- It doesn't show any sadism or satisfaction from the suffering of other life forms. It only does what it was created to do and to ensure the survival of the Zerg. It also doesn't express hatred or any other feeling for its enemies.
- It has a cool voice and monologue. (if you don't believe it, just listen to this).
- The Overmind is not a mindless being that goes berserk. Instead, it is a refined and intelligent creature that relies just as much on strategy and planning as on brute strength and numbers and has successfully led the Swarm for millennia in its conquests, evolving it and learning from past mistakes to improve the Zerg and make them more deadly.
- When it learns that Amon is going to wipe out the Zerg eventually, the Overmind decides to do something about it even though it can't go directly against its master due to its overriding directive. Instead, it infests a Terran woman named Sarah Kerrigan (the other Starcraft MB villain) and turns her into the Queen of Blades to make sure that she would eventually kill Amon. This way, the Overmind saves the Zerg and partially redeems itself by ensuring the destruction of Amon. It dies in peace with satisfaction about what it had accomplished.
- Even years after the Overmind's death and Amon's defeat, the Zerg still hold the former in high esteem.
- Even Brood Queen Zagara, Kerrigan's successor after her ascension to Xel'Naga, acknowledged the Overmind as the greatest Zerg leader. Even though she herself never met the Overmind and was born after it's death.
What Makes It A Baddie?[]
- It slaughtered almost all of the Xel'Naga and destroyed their world-ships, under Amon's orders.
- It went on a galactic rampage with the Zerg Swarm which lasted for millennia. During this period, the Overmind and the Zerg consumed and assimilated countless civilizations and killed untold billions of beings.
- As soon as it reached the Koprulu Sector, it slaughtered the population of the planets Chau Sara, Mar Sara, Antiga Prime and Tarsonis (which is the most populated Terran world).
- It regularly spreads the Zerg virus, turning many into mindless, zombie-like creatures who attack their former friends and families and suffer in the process.
- It captured Sarah Kerrigan after killing all her men, subjected her to horrible experiments and mutations and turned her into the Queen of Blades, which makes the Overmind indirectly responsible for all the crimes she has committed.
- It attempted to slaughter the entire Protoss race and assimilate them into the Zerg Swarm, successfully killing millions in the process and forcing the Protoss to abandon their home world before being defeated.
- The Overmind has plans to assimilate all life in existence until only the Zerg remain.
